2 year contract problem

Assuming a new iphone will be released every year (a very realistic assumption), if I'm stuck with a 2 year contract, how do I switch to the new iphone in 2009?

Pay the more expensive upgrade price. In this case it is $200 more.

Sounds like a deal to me as I have to pay the $400 as Im not eligible until December.
