 Um, because I can't afford to spend double for the same product?? Yeah, the ACD looks gorgeous. If money were no object, I'd gladly buy one. But hey...money is definitely an object. There's something to be said for function over form as well.

Double for the same product?

Well, maybe in the USA, but not where I live.
Got these from Apple Austria and Dell Austria homepage:

Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW 20" widescreen LCD Monitor. 300cd/m² Helligkeit, 600:1 Kontrastverhältnis, 16ms Reaktionzeit. Midnight grey TCO99

723,84*€

Apple Cinema Display 20"
819,00 €
(682,50 € exkl. MwSt.)

Versandfertig in: 24 Std.

20" (50,8 cm sichtbare Bildschirmdiagonale)
optimale Auflösung von 1680 x 1050 Pixeln
16,7 Millionen Farben
DVI-Anschluss
USB 2.0 Hub mit zwei Anschlüssen
2 FireWire 400 Anschlüss

723,84*€ vs 819,00 € is hardly double the cost if I remember my maths lessons correctly. But this also demonstrates why I would choose the apple over the dell anytime. 95,16 € is a price I'm willing to pay for looks. If it was double the price here in Austria too I'd maybe give it some second thoughts.

you forgot one thing. General you can knock dells prices down even more with one of there many coupon codes that are pretty easy to come by.

but even out side of that. USA price for both stores.

Dell 20 wide screen $439.20 (with a 3 year warrenty compared to apple's 1 year warrenty)
Apple 20 wide screen $799.00
Or you can just look at Dell 24in wide screen with a 1 year warrenty for $999.00
This price is how much I would pay today with out any coupons or anything and I pretty sure I could find some coupons to make the dell one go even lower. But that should give you some food for though on price.

what if it did less than the cheaper one though? and it smaller in size?
even though the screens were made by the same company?

what if *shock* niether of the monitors were Apple? then what?

PS you're comparing 2 20"....the 2405FPW is the next model up ;)

Yes I am. The 24" Dell costs 1.199,44*€ here.

So I'm not sure I fully understand your post.

Could you please also elaborate on the if neither of the monitors were Apple bit? I was talking about design and looks and not about companies. In fact I'd personally rather get a Formac display than a Dell. To each their own, I can fully understand why someone else might choose otherwise. I just like the stuff I spend a lot of money on to looks good. As an example I'm more than happy I bought my Cube 5 years ago and no Powermac. Of course the Powermac would have provided me with more performance for the same money, but 5 years later the Cube still stands on my desk and each time I look at it I enjoy how beautiful it is.

This whole Apple vs Dell display comes up alost every week. How come everytime someone says he would choose style over functions (he may not actually need) and buy a product not based on pure facts but also on the feeling in his belly there come three posts against him?

Once again to each their own. The original poster had asked what people would choose and I posted what I would choose and why.

So the 2405 vs the apple price difference is quite great.
if you're happy to choose form over functionality then that is totally your choice, I personally cannot understand it.
I'd rather have something I know will do what I need it to do rather than it look pretty but fall short on performance.

the reason I asked if there would be a difference if niether were apple was that some people will spend thousands on an item worth hundreds as long as it's Apple, just making sure you weren't one of them :)

like you say, to each thier own, I am the original poster, and was just trying to get everyone's opinion, but also understand why they have those opinions.

Then why were you so quick to jump on me as a designer for not purchasing an ACD? Road goes both ways.

The Dell 20" monitor here can be purchased for $325-450 without much trouble through online coupons. That's brings the cost to around half (or less) of the 20" ACD. Comparatively, the 24" Dell can be purchased for $775-850 without much trouble, which brings the price to roughly the same or slightly higher than the 23" ACD. So, simply put, I'd rather get more for my money even if it doesn't look as good.

However, I can also appreciate the aesthetic values of the apple products. If you're willing to pay extra for that smile, more power to ya.

I have thought long and hard about this question, and i finally chose to go with the 2005FPW. It is a great monitor. Enough said.
