Why is it only one extra year? Didn't AppleCare always add 2 years on top of the original one year??

AppleCare is what you get for the year, AppleCare+ is if you drop it/break it etc that also extends it to 2 years

Nope it's just on top of the existing warranty. (2 years total)

You only get so many days of phone support (90 days I think) and 1 year of hardware defects included in the purchase of the phone.
