I was transcoding several hours of footage to prores, and at the end I realised a 200 GB virtual machine had been created. Is that normal? Kinda freaked me out as I thought I was reaching the end of my hard drive space.

If you were transcoding and storing the video in the VM, then yes, it is normal.
