OK. I was thinking, essentially, you would have a tank that you could slip the iMac onto the side. Maybe use the existing iMac support leg but cut it shorter, giving it the effect of being there when viewed from front.

An interesting project anyway! I googled around some, many examples of G3 iMacs as aquariums, only the for a G5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2GQl6SHcL8

I'm afraid you've lost me. I don't want to be cutting through solid metal in any case. The leg/stand looks great as it is and it's totally doable without hacking it apart. I want it to look good also, that's the whole point of using an old G5 rather than buying a tank, I want it to look smart & relatively modern.

Yeah I saw that video, that's what convinced me this was a good idea! lol He MUST'VE hacked the back about a little though cause those fish are way too big if he hasn't.

It would only work as a nano tank with very small fish. Otherwise it would be cruel.

I realise this, which is why when the second iMac arrives I'm gonna combine the two front panels in order to more than DOUBLE the depth. I'll still have tiny fish and MAY even have room for a filter & heater, but it's not the end of the world if not.
