Hey PPCers
A couple weeks ago I bid on an unknown model eMac on shopgoodwill.com, and ended up being the only bid. I paid a whopping $10.99USD along with around $18 in shipping. The eMac was absolutely trashed looking which is probably why nobody else wanted it. These were some of the photos from the auction:
Obviously it was pretty beat up and likely would've ended up in the trash or whatever goodwill does with stuff like this they can't sell.
The eMac arrived actually packed pretty decently and didn't get damaged anymore than it already was.
I plugged it in, turned it on and it booted right up to Tiger. To my surprise it was a 2005 1.42Ghz model, something I have been in search of for years.
The caps seem to be okay, and the original faceplate said that it was an Apple refurb. Could Apple have possibly replaced the capacitors already?
I purchased this with the intent of taking it and my recently deceased 1 GHz ATI Graphics eMac to make one good one. My 1GHz eMac just doesn't turn on, so it might just be a PSU.
But here is the 1.42 rescued and fully repaired with the 1GHz eMac's front faceplate:
I upgraded the ram from 512MB to 1GB (and currently have two 1GB sticks on the way, the ones I had wouldn't work). Installed Leopard and have been using it for a few hours since I finished this job up. This post is being written with it, and even on 1GB of ram with Leopard it is totally quick. It feels like my Al PowerBooks.
As a side note, I was curious to see if the machine would run Jaguar, or Panther despite shipping with Tiger. It does! I also posted about it in their respective threads.
