Update:
So I reconfigured my RAM, now only using my 2gig module each in position 1 &2 on the board... after that I ran MemTest 86 - no errors occurred... and do far no other crashes while using mac -thanks!

I think maybe it's just a fluke the strix worked in one of my mac pros.

I have a feeling the 6 to 8pin power adapter can't deliver the current that card really needs.

I had no problems running the nvidia gtx 970, and gtx 760 off the dual 6pin connectors.

I don't know if they make a dual 6 to single 8 combiner?? probably not?
Not sure if those connectors on the mac pro board are separately regulated or in parallel??

The card only has a TDP of 145W. A single 6-pin plus the slot can deliver 150W.

Anything from GK104/GM104 is NEVER going to burn up a Mac Pro.

You are working yourself into a lather for nothing.

You can take advice form someone who has literally tested 1,000s of GPUs in Macs or you can keep guessing with no actual knowledge, your call.

I've tried this strix in three 1,1 and one 2,1 mac pro's using the 6pin to 8pin adapter cable
and it has only given me output on one of them.

I'm going by what is actually happening in front of me.

And I'm not worried about burning anything up, I'm worried about starving the video card of current.

145W might be for a reference card.

How many connectors are on the card? I can only see one 8 pin. You could certainly get a dual 6 pin to single 8 pin adapter.

It's got the single 8pin
Also I'd love to find one if it exists.

I have not seen the dual 6 to 8 adapter.
 
I'm rebuilding an installer for my 1,1. Is it necessary to lock the new boot.efi in CoreServices? I realized that even the first time I installed Mavericks on this Mac, I never locked the new file once I replaced it. Obviously it hasn't affected the install process (already installed 10.10 once, and 10.9 twice) but I'm asking anyway - if anything, just out of curiosity ;)

There is no reason not to do it is recommended.

Thanks I might have to grab that.

I've encountered many quirks when getting these non mac flashed Nvidia cards working.

I was able to get a basic PC nvidia 210 to boot no problem.
I had an issue where something bad happened with the web driver install (possibly something happened because the owner had 2 flakey 512mb memory modules causing periodic memory error flashing light) and it stopped booting any nvidia card at all except some really old ones that don't work quite right under yosemite.

I did a fresh install the 210 worked again. Tried a Zotac GTX970 wouldn't boot at all.

Put back in the 210 installed the webdriver reboot, it worked.
Tried Zotac again and it boot into osx fine using the web driver.

Seems very odd but some of these newer cards seem to need the webdriver installed and working before it will initialize them.

So I guess the moral of this story is, always have a cheap dependable video card for setup and loading web drivers, before installing a non macflashed high end Nvidia card.

Oh yes and don't try to install any hardware drivers that require system restart when the ram is flakey.

It isn't odd. It is well documented that the default OS X Nvidia driver does not support Maxwell based GPUs (750,750ti,9xx). You must have the web drivers installed for them to work. I have the same situation on my hackintosh so it has nothing to do with it being a Mac Pro 1,1 or using a modified boot.efi.

If you want a card that just works and is still a mid-range card the GTX 570 is a good choice.
