2006 Imac 24" white nothing on screen

Hi guys my Imac 20" white 2006 model has now nothing on the screen any more.
It boots up as i can here it do it in the background and can here the chime.
but nothing on screen.

is this a common fault with this model
is it likely to be an inverter, ( do they have and inverter/
Or am i looking at replacing screen?

oh and to add i added an external monitor via the back extension port and i can then see the information on the mac.

so works via back not front main screen.

any clues what it is that i need to replace???
