I've just obtained a 17" iMac Core-Duo 1.83GHz (iMac 4,1) I was wondering if I upgrade the T2400 CPU to a T7600 (Core2Duo 2.33GHz) that it would then also support 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB maximum (effectively making it an iMac 5,1)

It isn't particularly important whether or not this is possible. This particular iMac will be put to work as a printer server on my home network. I bought it for a song.

Mine is alredy upgraded with a T7200, after iMac5,1 firmware upgrade you can upgrade the RAM to ~3GB. With all of this upgrades 10.8.x running fine on that machine with iMessage and Facetime support.

While attempting to upgrade the HDD, I accidentally tore the SATA port off the logic board. Looks like I have to pull the board out and solder on a new SATA port.

Is there any particular way I should go about re-attaching the SATA port on the logic board, or should I take a spare SATA cable, cut one end off and solder the wires directly?
