My venerable iMac is upgraded to High Sierra using dosdude1's patcher having had its CPU replaced with a Intel Core 2 T9500 and runs with 6GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. It's still very usable!

The only issue I have with the machine is the screen has tinted yellow with use. I am guessing this is down to the backlights wearing out.

Is there an economic repair I could do to improve the screen's colour rendering, eg by replacing the backlights? If so any links greatly appreciated!

Just calibrate the colour to make it less yellowish.
Replacing the backlights is not an easy job, and you may screw up a working machine.

After 14 years, "the fix" is to start looking for a replacement...
Yep - 2019 iMac bought at the start of UK lockdown last year as the 24 incher was very occasionally freezing requiring a forced reboot. Gave me a bit of a wobble as I was by then working 100% remote and the thought of it giving up the ghost was kinda worrying. 40GB core i9 27 inch 1TB SSD - just didn't go for the graphics upgrade as I thought an external video card using a thunderbolt enclosure would be fine later if needed.

Good point - I'll have another go with the x-rite colormunki. I was previously trying to match to an old 16:9 24 inch Dell screen which now attaches to my 2019 iMac but I make no effort to match it now to the 5k screen! Thanks for the info on the backlights.

I'm still using a Dell 2407WFP next to my iMac 27". A little yellowish, some stain-like marks caused by the aging plastic holders inside the CCFL backlight box. But after some simple calibration, it's till usable, and the texts are ultra-sharp. I'd just use it until it deteriorate to unusable level. Luckily I'm not in the color-accurate profession and not so picky about screen color.

A mighty fine monitor - exactly what I have here too! Great for retro computing too (Spectrum Next) with the VGA input in addition to the DVI.
