Yesterday I was just using my old macbook pro for browsing the web like any other day. I shut the lid and went downstairs to get a drink and came back up and nothing happened when I opened the lid. Tried to do everything I could to no avail. Now when I start the Macbook the optical drive makes the normal noise it always has on start, and I can hear fans running, but that's it. No startup chime, black screen. No illuminated keyboard, lights dont come on for caps lock/num lock keys.

Anyone know what the problem is?

This could be all sorts of things. The best place to start is probably this Guide. However just on my initial gut feelings it sounds like it might be something to do with the logic board.

It could be the dreaded 8600m GT gpu failure. Sorry.

If that's the case then it's worth speaking to a genius in an Apple Store. However, try some of the points listed in the guide above.
