i will soon be inheriting a 2007 mac pro, dual quadcore xenon server class processors, 12 gig of ram etc, etc. My question is would a $50 battery backup/surge protector be good enough? I don't plan on leaving it on when not in use.

    Thank's

Cost for battery backup will depend on how much power you need to provide, and how long you want to stay on line if power drops off.
You would want a power capability of a good 300 watts or so.
I don't think you will get that for $50. $125 will probably be on the cheap for that, and you will have enough for maybe 5 minutes.

Get a used APC SUA 1500.
    With a 90 day warranty.
    Via eBay.
    Several reputable stores.
Rack mount unit will be a little more expensive, desk standing one is just fine.

You will need a pure sine wave unit.

i will only be using it for the computer itself. Computer will only be on when i am using it, was wondering what the minimum battery back up should be in time for me to safely shut it down?

using it to give me time to properly shut it down in case the power goes out. Also as a surge protecter.

Kind of a broad question given how big the United States of America is.
