My 2008 iMac is very slow and always seems to be accessing the internal HDD, I don't have a Bootcamp partition, does anyone have any suggestions what I could do, I am running 10.11.6 el capitan

Does Disk Utility show any problems?
It could be a failing HDD. Check the SMART status with SMART Utility:

Next how full is the hard drive, how much memory does the machine have and are you running any cleaning apps and/or antivirus software?
Also try Recovery Mode and check out the drive by running Disk First Aid.
