2008 Macbook - Selection Box won't go away

Heya,

So this morning, when using this 2008 MacBook, the selection box won't go away. I went and cleaned out the gunk, and fiddle with the double click speed. I manage to get it in a fashion, where I can finesse, and the selection box will go away.

Is this something I can fix by popping off the top and just gently nudging the mouse button up? Or do I need a new top case?
