I have installed High Sierra on my 2009 13" 2.26 GHz MacBook Pro, and it is very nice. It feels like a fully supported machine. No issues, and performance is acceptable, with 8 GB RAM and SSD.

I also have a 2008 white MacBook 13" 2.4 GHz MacBook, with 4 GB RAM and SSD, but it's annoying since it's stuck on 10.7 Lion. For example, the browsers are all old versions, which sometimes can cause compatibility issues, and also it means that security updates are a problem. However, it would seem from my brief investigations that getting Yosemite (or Mavericks) on a 2008 white MacBook is nowhere near as easy or slick as it is for High Sierra is for the 2009 MBP, judging by the forum threads I've skimmed through.

Would it be a waste of time to try to get Yosemite (or Mavericks) on the 2008 white MacBook? I don't want to lose functionality or have glitchy results. I also don't want to have super choppy animations.

I didn't mention El Capitan, but it would seem that El Capitan is more problematic.
