2009 iMac as monitor

Has anyone got this to work? And if so, can you please share the details of your setup?

I am trying with miniDP cable and iMac is on Mavericks. All I ever get is a black screen on the iMac, then after a few seconds it reverts back to the desktop.

My setup:

27" iMac Late2009 / Mavericks
miniDP male to miniDP male & macbook air / Mavericks
miniDP male to DP male & windows8.1 PC

neither work. Before I scrap the iMac, would be interested from anyone who has a working setup similar to this

What size is your iMac? Only the 27" models can be used as an external display.
