2009 iMac freezes and pixels turn colors

I got a 2009 iMac 24" that is having some issues. After a little bit of use (30 mins or so) the screen becomes jumbled, freezes, and some of the pixels turn different colors. Only way to get out of it is to reset the computer. I've attached some pictures for you to see.


As you can see the screen becomes all messed up

Here you can see where the pixels are turning multiple colors.

It looks like your iMac's GPU is failing. You might be able to avoid the issue by increasing fan speed using smcFanControl or by "baking" the GPU, but the only permanent fix is to replace the GPU.

That is what I was thinking. Is this something that I could probably do with the help of a youtube video or something? I do have a bit of experience in building/repairing PC's but never worked on a Mac. Thanks for your help.

Here is a GPU replacement guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2267+Graphics+Card+Replacement/13765. Luckily it's removable and not soldered to the board like the 2012+ models, but it is a custom part and very hard to find.

I have had success in rebaking the original card, adding thermal paste better and using a fan control software to keep the mac cooler than stock on 2009 and 2010 iMacs.
