I tried Handbrake on SL... the DVD drive sounded like a galloping horse and never read the DVD... OK... I thought it was SL... Upgraded to latest version.. 64 bit and all.. 64 bit VLC also.... Nothing.....

So I booted into Leopard and the DVD sounded like a galloping horse and refused to read the DVD... DVD player works just fine.....

Any ideas? Are these some kind of anti-ripping drives??

The 64-bit Handbrake snapshots tend to be hit or miss at transcoding straight from the disc. Try a 32-bit version if you're not going to rip the discs first.

It's an issue with VLC at the moment, I've been using MTR to rip then encoding from that rip. It's waaaay faster than from the DVD and allow you to queue up movies for overnight encoding.

Handbrake worked great on my OLD 2006 MacPro in Leopard.
It dies reading the DVD on the NEW 2009 Mac Pro in Leopard.

It never gets past scanning the DVD for tracks...

Shouldn't be a problem with VLC or Handbrake.... Its something in the Hardware. The problem is the same in Leopard as Snow Leopard.

I saw posts on the net relating to new anti-rip drives. Could this be the case?

Anyone have any thoughts other than the Genius bar?

I was having this trouble with SL on a 2006 MP. Couldn't scan the titles of the disc. I resolved it by using the latest snapshot released on 30th September. I got the link from a sticky in the top of the handbrake.fr forum.
