Hi everyone! I am new to Macs. I bought this 2010 MacBook Pro fully loaded version on eBay for $440. I used it for about an hour before it started to restart. So far it restarted 4 times not really doing much on it. It is running Mac OS Catalina 10.15 Beta. I feel like it may be a hard dive issue not too sure. Every time it restarts it says "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue." and once it boots up it shows me an error report of some kind. Thank you for taking your time.

Here is the error report:
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f9484983d): "GPU Panic: mux-regs 5 3 7f 0 0 0 severity 3 WS-ready 1 switch-state 0 IG FBs 0 EG FBs 1:3 power-state 0 3D idle HDA idle system-state 1 power-level 20:20 connect-change 0 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff9138b1c000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P3/4\n"@/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.28.4/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:170

i would return it, MacOS Catalina supports only 2012 and newer Mac's, it means your 2010 Macbook Pro has been running a Patched/modded version of MacOS Catalina, $440 will be plenty enough to buy 2013 - 2014 MBP, retina display plus upgradeable to NVME drives.

You are running a beta operating system (10.15 Catalina) and one that is not supported on your Macbook Pro without patching the system to allow installation and booting. One of the struggles on a patched system is the graphics drivers. That is likely most of the struggle right now. The patching software (from dosdude1.com) is still being worked on, and modified frequently. That may settle down in the next few weeks, when Catalina is released in a final version. I think you should watch the dosdude1 site for updates, and recommendations on how to proceed. I would suggest that you download the macOS Catalina patcher app, available at dosdude1.com - which will provide a simple method of downloading the release Catalina installer software, and also makes it easy to create a USB installer from that installer, along with the patches that dosdude supplies so the installer will run on your old MBPro.
Once you have that, you can boot from the installer, and reinstall Catalina with that finalized version, with the patches. You may (hopefully) find that your MacBook Pro runs more stabley.

Finally, does your "new" MacBook Pro still have a hard drive, or has that been replaced with an SSD (solid state drive)? I would expect there would be real challenges in keeping the system stable if you still have the old hard drive installed.

Hi thanks for the reply! Hmm I’ll try checking out his website and his patch tool. It has a 1tb 5400 rpm hdd not sure if it’s the original or not. The full specs are 2.8 ghz i7, 8gb of ram running at 1067mhz and the 1680x1050 display

Wow...
Whoever sold you that gave you a good challenge. I would never sell a Mac with an unsupported operating system installed. It will work but will be a bum hobby when you admit to being new to the Mac.
You may be having hardware problems with the graphics chip. It's hard to know for sure now, because you are running with patched graphics drivers.
I would recommend that until you get your system sorted out, that you erase the hard drive, and go back to a system that you know is supported by the hardware. Newest system for that would be macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). That is still supported with security updates, and you can at least be sure that the software (the graphics drivers) should not be contributing to your problems. Right now, you don't know.
(You could also swap out the slow hard drive for an SSD - the boot time would go from a minute (or longer) to probably about 15 seconds. Every other task would be noticeably faster with an SSD as the boot drive.

It's also going to be a challenge if you don't have access to another Mac to help with system software downloads, etc. But, doable, if you want to try to keep using your "new" laptop.

Ok thanks for the help! I will downgrade to high Sierra but might experiment with the dosdude1’s Catalina patch tool in the future I sure do like the dark mode when it is working. This has so far been my first Mac other than an old snowball g4 I have.

The GPU panic is probably due a bad/failing capacitor that handles graphics switching in the Macbook Pro 6,2 (mid-2010 15") and changing the OS is not going to make a difference. A hardware fix is required.

These computers are also prone to a hardware failure on the GPU related components, you can search the forums for extensive threads on it. I would absolutely return this computer; I'd say you overpaid for it at $440, particularly given the potential for hardware issues.

Sadly you may be right. After installing High Sierra the problem still remains when I try to run the 3D test in cinebench r15.

I really hoped it wouldn’t be a gpu problem since I thought mostly 2011 MacBook pros had that problem. Unfortunately I cannot really return it right now. The condition it’s in is almost like new so really unfortunate if it’s a gpu problem. :(

Replacing the capacitor is quite easy if you are handy. Meanwhile, try the software fix until you can arrange a hardware fix: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...for-kernel-panic-of-macbook-pro-2010.2044304/
I asked the seller who sold me this MacBook about this the screen turning off and he told me it was a common problem in these MacBook Pros and that the transistor that switches between graphics will need to be replaced or that I can use the software patch to help. He also said that it is relatively inexpensive to take to a store and fix. How much would it cost me to fix this at a computer repair store?

The capacitor itself is very inexpensive. It's the labour required to remove the board and replace the capacitor that is expensive.

Any competent board-level repair tech should be able to do it easily. The Mac repair person I always use is not the cheapest around but his work has always been top-notch. I'm not sure where you are located but it cost me approx $90 CAD for everything.

How long do you think the cap will last after replacing it? I saw dosdude1’s repair video on it and he used a larger cap? I wouldn’t want to just last 2 years or less. Thanks
