I've had the same problem with my 27" I-mac. I telephoned technical support who immediately gave me a service ref No. and told me that the service company would call to arrange a pick up. Approximately 2 minutes after putting the phone down to Apple I got a call from the service company who arranged a pick up for the next day, asking if I wanted am or pm. They were on the doorstep at 8am the next day with a packing box to to transport the i-mac. The company has stayed in touch, leaving me updates and appologising for the delay. It turns out they got a new screen, but weren't happy with the fit, so sent for another. They tell me that they will deliver it back to me this morning.
They described the issue as screen burn. Although I am worried that this has happened on a machine that is under a year old, I can't fault the after care that I received from Apple and the service company.

Just out of curiosity, do you not have an Apple store nearby? Or will Applecare always give you this option to pick up and deliver?

Keep us posted about this "screen burn". I've read many posts about the same problem on the 27" screens.

Hi guys. I'm new to the forum and thought i'd share my input on this subject.

I know this is an old post but i want to help those with this experience.

I too have a 2010 iMac with screen burn. A guy told me it was because the heat can cause it to burn in - however i called BS on that one. I'm not saying it's not possible, it's just i don't believe that it's that prone to burn - unless you have the brightness on full and NEVER turn it off.

Anyway, my imac now is over 3 years old and i have no Applecare etc. Basically - out of warranty and etc.

I got an email a couple of months ago about the Seagate Hard drive issue (http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac-harddrive/), and mine was nearly going to expire, so i made a genius appointment and took it in.

I told the genius about the screen burn - and he advised me that the screen was under investigation that it may be prone to faults.

Anyway - to cut a long story short, if you have screen burn on your iMac 2010 - make a genius bar appointment and take it in. I took mine in today for the Seagate Hard drive replacement, and they are now also replacing the burnt screen with a new one free of charge under their warranty.

If you are absolutely stuck - phone apple care and ask.

BEAR IN MIND this is my input, and this is from experience today.

Hope this helps anyone out there with screen burn.

I hope this doesn't count as resurrecting a zombie thread but let me tell you I've had the exact same marks on the right screen of my mid 2010 iMac 27' (Quadcore i5 2.8ghz, ATI 5750 1GB, 16 GB VRAM, 1TB HDD).

The issue was that I was running it with Mac OS 10.6.8 in Target Display Mode for really really long with just a black screensaver (not continuously). I've noticed that the iMac gets a bit hoter as the TDM was running even thought I've disabled almost everything (however I have a custom script running that disables and enables Bluetooth depending on the state of TDM).

Yes the marks were exactly the same as you guys have! On the right side almost the whole screen had one big mark. It wasn't looking like your regular ghosting but really like these "weird burn marks" showing in the 2 photos in this picture.

I've gotten rid of it (!!!) by setting a white screensaver (100% white) and letting it run for two days (about 48 hours) and then turned the mac off for another 12 hours+-.

24 hours with minimum brightness and 48 hours with maximum brightness.

Be sure to turn of the energy saving settings thought so that the screensaver stays on all the time!

I know that this has been reported to help elsewhere but there was no source that had this kind of "burn marks" and got rid of it like that yet. I'm pretty happy now! And I repeat - yes these marks were exactly looking like those on the shots. I've made an shot with my iPhone somewhere if you want to I can upload an before / after picture showing proof that it 's fixed (there 's still some minimum traces left barely noticeable even on grey/green/red so I guess I'll have to repeat the process).

Cheers!

Alright, I'll bite. I've been lurking this thread for 2 years now to see if there was a home-fix for this (my Apple Store is an hour away and I don't want to lug my 27'' monster there).

Show us your pics.

Has anyone been able to remove the burned smokey marks from the lcd?

This is a know issue there are hundreds of threads about this on apple's own support forums. After having my screen replaced once it happened again just before my Applecare was about to run out. I told them I was not happy to accept another screen replacement as the issue would probably return after my applecare ran out and that it was a design problem. The Applecare person I spoke to was very helpful and sympathised with my concerns and agreed to replace my 2010 iMac with a brand new 2013.
