Hi all,

I think I've read all I could about the UP2715K together with a Classic Mac Pro and GTX 9xx series video card for 5k. I do have combination, but I just can't get it to work.

First, I tried everything on El Capitan, as things were still unlocked for 5k displays, contrary to what I read about Sierra.

So..

1. I used my GTX 680 Mac Edition with the display. Downloaded the webdrivers (346.03.15f09) for the GTX 6xx series (seems to be the same as the Quadro K5000 that I read about).
2. I switched the video cards. Now I'm running a Asus Strix GTX 960 2 GB video card in the Mac Pro, and everything boots up like I expected it to.
3. I entered the parameters into nvram (
sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1 nv_spanmodepolicy=1 nvda_drv=1"). Also without the kext-dev-mode on seperate boots).
4. I booted up the machine. And... Same. 4k display running 1440p. In the display menu my UP2715K reported it was running 1440p of max. 5k.
5. Okay, weird. Everybody reported I should get two screens. But no. So, power cycle.
6. Now I have a weird stretched screen where my display settings I'm running 5k, and the display tells me it's 2560x2880.
7. So I tried changing things in the display's menu. From wide 16:9 to auto detect. Which gave me a weird half screen overlapping itself. So, power cycle, and now a flickering mess and stretched screen.

I tried just about every combination and trick I read about (removing the DP cables, waiting at least a minute and trying again, no effect, pulling out one of two cables, power cycle and weird stretched screen again).

I'm lost. Don't know what to do next really. I'm running on 1 DP cable on 1440p again, so the display is usable again, but it's not retina really...

I wonder. Could it be the graphics card forcing something? Or the webdriver? Or something else I might have missed?

Oh, if the system preferences -> displays tells me I'm running 5k, it also has lots of 'low resolution' modes. They all look crap and seem to be 2560x2880 on the UP2715K and something else in the OS...

Can somebody help me?

Best regards,

Bas van Schooten.

The same thing happened to me with a Dell 4k, and the GTX960, on a MP5.1 (2010), try installing a little free app from the mac app store called "Display Menu" it allows you to see all resolutions available on your monitor. If that fails try SwitchResX

Good luck!.

I already did install Display Menu :) It did suggest all resolutions up to 5k were available. But the UP2715K never synced higher than 2560x2880x60 Hz. Whatever I did, that's what it did. So even if the OS did try to offer 5k to the display, nothing changed. But if I booted up with 1 DP and 4k, suddenly the UP2715K DID go to 4k and suggested 5k was also possible. But then, no 5k resolutions in El Capitan.
So, either 5k is available in El Capitan, but the display is stuck at 2560x2880, or the display offered up to 5k, but the OS never saw anything over 4k. *sigh*
I also tried SwitchResX, but that didn't really make any difference unfortunately...

Ooh... ok... well i missed the detail that i did this on Sierra, and thinking a bit deeper, according to the nvidia web page for the GTX960 i believe you might need --> * 5120x3200 at 60Hz with dual DisplayPort connectors.

you need an adapter for hooking up your monitor and getting enough data flow out of the card. Single DP or HDMI won't cut it.

ALSO bear in mind that different cards manufacturers will spec their cards differently; the specs for my 960 from EVGA (4GB SC Gaming) say that the maximum res is 4K. (Max Digital: 4096x2160), check your card manufacturer webpage for further info.

Cheers and Good Luck!

Boot the computer with the monitor disconnected from power (this is important, the monitor cannot be connected to wall power at all. Pressing the power button to turn it off is not enough.) Then wait for macOS to boot and connect the monitor back to wall power.

Hmm, mine is a Asus STRIX-GTX960-DC2OC-2GD5. 2 GB Asus. I really thought that 3 DP's would always mean it could do up to 5k. (Surfmavs). But, looking at the specs, I'm afraid it might actually not do that, max. 4k. Which it does do...

I am going to try the disconnect from power option next...
And 6502? :) That's Apple II timeframe :)
[doublepost=1504896781][/doublepost]Wow, so that was the trick :) Really take it from the power, boot up to MacOS, plug in and voila, 5k. Thanks all! Rkuo, great call, I'm really happy :)
