I'd rather see Massa bumped out of a ride than Heidfeld. But seeing how the rumor is MS/Mercedes I wouldn't fret over Massa missing a seat. Nick still hasn't signed with anyone... :(

And I'm not real sure about the viability of Lotus right now... poor little Jarno... :(

Really, I think Heidfeld been consistently mediocre since he started in F1.

Is that the Nick Heidfeld who outscored and outraced the highly rated Robert Kubica 10-9 this season?

Heidfeld is a good solid driver, on a par with more 'fashionable' drivers.

i agree that kubica is good but i think nick could be just as good or better. nick hasn't had a solid car yet. the williams, or the bmw he drove and kubica won with, probably were the best nick has seen as a driver but they clearly were not great. given a good ride he could be trouble.

I agree, I would put Hiedfeld in my second tier of current drivers, although he was in danger of dropping down I think this year he has been very strong in an uncompetitive car.

How would everyone else rank the current drivers, for me:

Alonso
Hamilton
Schumacher?

Kimi
Button
Vettel

Barichello
Massa
Kubica
Webber
Hiedfeld
Rosberg
Glock
Trulli

It looks highly unlikely Schumacher is going to return with Mercedes and it looks almost certain they're going with Heidfeld solely because he's German which makes it an all German Mercedes GP team. I'm not at all convinced that Nick is any driver with great talent, well I mean he was given the chance when BMW had a good car when Hamilton won the championship but he was absolutely below average, no where near Kubica.

Well having a serious teammate seems to do wonders for Nick's performance, so maybe he should have gone to McLaren instead of Button. :D

Where Nick Hiedfeld does well is with a poor car (as with this years BMW). He will get the car around the track, not have too many offs and be very consistent. That is the one thing that you need to improve a bad car, consistency. If I was running a team where the car wasn't a world beater Nick would be high on my list of drivers.

OK, so this Heidfled thing got me thinking about he he compared to his team mates, after 10 minutes on Wiki I got this:

Here I am comparing performances in each race to the team mate to see who got the most 'wins' against each other:

2000

Heidfeld 5
Alesi 4
(8 both DNF)

2001

Heidfeld 8
Raikkonen 6
(3 both DNF)

2002

Heidfeld 10
Massa / HHF 4
(3 both DNF)

2003*

Heidfeld 9
HHF 5
(2 both DNF)

2004

Heidfeld 10
Rantano / Glock 5
(3 both DNF)

2005**

Heidfeld 6
Webber 5
(3 both DNF)

2006

Heidfeld 10
Villeneuve / Kubica 6
(2 both DNF)

2007

Heidfeld 10
Kubica / Vettel 7
(0 both DNF)

2008

Heidfeld 7
Kubica 11
(0 both DNF)

2009

Heidfeld 10
Kubica 7
(0 both DNF)

*although Heidfeld 'won' more races Frentzen scored more points
** Heidfeld only competed in 14 due to a testing / motorbike accident

So in his 10 seasons in F1 only once has a team mate finished ahead of him in more races and only twice has he been out scored, and he has been up against some very talented driver; Raikkonen, Massa, Villeneuve and Kubica.

Heidfeld may not be all show, but he gets the job done and he deserves his place on the grid with a good car in 2010.

Undoubtedly he has quite a solid history. But what separates him from them is that Raikkonen is a world champion. Massa and Kubica came close to become champions and yet, given the circumstances of 2008, he has yet to prove himself worthy.

I mean no doubt he deserves a drive in 2010, but he is somewhat a midfielder, at least IMO. I mean come on, yet to win a race during his TEN seasons in Formula One?

Note the car is not yet complete: the gun rack is still to be added. Rumours of cart springs and a live rear axle yet to be confirmed...

Note to our US friends: this is a joke. I know you are not all rednecks driving cars based on technology from the 1900s.

Sweet! I want one! Think I'll have to wait for the gun rack option to be available though. Will it come with "Corinthian Leather"?;)

Of those ten years how many where in a car capable of winning? One is the best I can think of and that was Heidfelds poorest year.

How many years did Button and Hakkinen have to wait?

At any team, even a top team, Heidfeld would be a decent proposition as he 'gets the job done' and is very consistent. OK he is never going to rock the boat and beat a Hamilton or Alonso but he will give you 100%.

Based on this past year I think I'd have to swap Kimi and Webber on your list.

Also, I think the good will for Kubica is just carryover from 08. He's not bad, but I don't think he's deserving of all of the praise he gets. Given how bad the car has been I think Nick deserves just the same if not more credit, although some others have already touched on that.

I like Nick - I thought he was unlucky to not get the Mclaren drive ahead of Kimi all those years ago. I do think he'll get the drive next year with Mercedes, although only as a stop-gap while they wait for Vettel. This is why I think Jenson left - Nico will have a multi-year contract, and with Mercedes bringing in Sebastian, I think Jenson thought he may as well get a guaranteed drive with a top team instead of doing what will now forever be known as "doing a Kimi".

Indeed. I think it also has a lot to do with the potential of the Mercedes car for next year. I am sure it will not be as dominant and he has far more of a chance at McLaren. I only hope they design a car which will suite JB's driving style. Lewis seems to get the best out of a car that he can throw around which Jenson is as smooth as anyone out there.

This is obviously a Photoshop job. Everyone knows cars from S.C. have Confederate flags. :p

the electric car top gear made (last episode) would prob be a good contender.

ugh... whats happened to f1.
