I know the 3GS just came out and it's probably a bit premature to start speculating on what Apple will release in June, 2010. Still, this is a rumor site..

-Any chance the next iPhone will have 4G?
-Will it be opened up to other carriers?

What would make those more/less likely to occur (e.g., technology, infrastructure, contracts, etc)?

Oh my GOD.....couldn't you have searched the already 47,364 threads already existing on this EXACT same question?

NO ONE KNOWS. There's your answer.

why do you think anyone a message board would have that kind of information? It's common sense that only Apple and AT&T "higher ups" can probably answer that. They say there's no such thing as a stupid question?

I doubt it; while the phone may be capable of 4G, it will most likely be capped to the 3G network.

4G roll-out will be slow; we'll see consumer capable 4G-phones sometime 1Q11.

ATT doesnt even have 3G in a lot of common places and we cant even have MMS because the 3G network isnt strong enough. SOOO what makes you think ATT will have 4G...

4G? Very doubtful. No need to put a 4G radio, which will cost more and suck more battery, in a device when the 4G zones will probably be tiny. Take a look at Sprint's 4G network. It's in three cities, maybe a fourth soon. Plus, what good is all that extra speed if the things you need it for, such as downloading large apps/stuff from iTunes, can't be done except on WiFi?

As far as other carriers, maybe. Apple could easily open it up to T-Mobile in the US assuming the AT&T deal ends next year. But unless Verizon is making a huge push to get in, you won't see an iPhone on Verizon or Sprint until 4G is widespread. Apple would have to create a CDMA-capable version, which I don't think Apple really cares to do.

AT&T can't support the 3G that came out last year.

The new "dual 3G" is only in Chicago.

So even if they release a 4G iPhone next year, you won't be able to take advantage of it on AT&T.

I did try a search before my original post, but nothing came back on "4G."
Thank you to the non-pricks who posted an informative reply

Being that 4G will just start rolling out in 2010 and full penetration by the end of 2011, I say not. Apple is not going to a sell a phone using a new system until it was some saturation. 2010 will be nothing more than 3G as it is today.
Let's face it, 3G was available when iPhone first came out.

What makes you think the rest of the world will wait till AT&T upgrades to 4G?

The rest-of-the-world may not wait to upgrade their respective networks, but Apple is a US-based company with interests in the US mobile market.

Apple derives nearly 46% of all iPhone revenue from the US market; taking that into consideration, it should be fairly clear that Apple will wait for its US mobile partner.

where's your source for this? MMS doesn't rely only on 3G (correct me if I am wrong)... I've been able to MMS on Cingular/ATT for several years now (except with the iPhone... Apple are really to blame there)

Thank you lol

I thought MMS used data, because if you put a total data block on your line you can no longer do MMS. Its just billed as free data.

True you dont need 3G, you just need some form of internet. However most people with iPhones are in a 3G area and the picture is not going to go through edge, its going to go through 3G.

Yea that makes sense as opposed to serving the 54% international market (by your numbers).

exactly, whether GPRS, Edge, or 3G... MMS uses data. The lack of current MMS (for iPhones) may be ATT's fault, but Apple are not completely blameless...

to get back to relevancy, IMO, I do not think the cell network will be ready for a 4G iPhone by next summer
