I have a 2010 Mini which has performed stellar since day 1. When I got it I put 8GB of RAM in it. We use it for normal web browsing, iPhoto stuff, Zinga games (wife), Media Center (music and video streaming). It's currently running 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Outside of an SSD install what else can be done to keep it operating smoothly and as efficiently as possible. A new machine is not in the budget until next year so I'm trying to get the most out of this one that I can.

Second question is should I upgrade to Mavericks?

    Thanks

im running the same on mavericks and i too dabble with the idea of the SSD option. Mavericks is clean on the 2010 mini so far. A couple programs broke on me - third party ones, and you dont get the airplay your display to apple tvs but so far mavericks is as fast or faster than snowleopard - i jumped both lions. Id say if you are already on ML then there is no reason NOT to be on Mavericks.

Agreed. I have a 2010 mini with 8GB of RAM and a 240GB SSD running Mavericks. I use it as a headless media server so my usage of it is limited and specific, but for what I do use it for, everything performs quickly and flawlessly. The SSD was the biggest improvement. Tasks like demuxing & remuxing video are so much faster than with a mechanical drive. My only regret is not making the switch to an SSD much sooner.
