from what I gather the Mac Pro 4,1 with dual physical processors use CPU's w/o IHS. Does the 2010 MP use CPU's with or without IHS? Thanks! Sorry if it's been asked before, I couldn't find a definitive answer. Thanks again!

2010 uses the standard processor with IHS.

Okay thanks Scott. So all of them use IHS? I want to buy a 2010 DP Mac Pro but I'm a little leary about lidless CPU's. Do you have any experience with it?

Yes,ALL of them using standard CPU with IHS.

However, be very very careful when buying that on internet. Some seller may ident their 2009 Mac Pro as 2010 / 2012 after they flash it to 5,1.

Thanks for the info. Yeah that's what makes me a little weary about it. Maybe I'll hold out for a local deal on one

But I should still be able to look it up via serial number right. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the firmware hack changes the serial number?

Ask for a picture of the serial number sticker. You'll be able to tell from the original processor configuration and the GPU whether it's a 2009 or 2010.

Correct, the serial number check should be very safe. And you may ask for the system info screenshot to check the SMC version. 2010 has a different version then 2009 model. (my example is a 2009 flashed 5,1)

As long as, the processor tray's SMC is correct, and the serial number on that page is same as the sticker, that should be a real 2010 model.
