Just picked up a 2010 17" MacBook Pro i7. Incredible for a 10 year old machine. This is a decently powerful machine for basic things. Anyone have this machine still? The first gen i7 isn't terrible. The screen is better than the average laptop screen today being that it is slightly more than 1080, and the HD/switchable nVidia graphics are good for most everyday consumer things like YouTube and web browsing.

This machine is in pretty good condition with some considerable damage to the CD ROM Drive slot, possibly from an idiot, a butter knife, and a stuck CD.

I will be repairing a 15" MacBook that I recently F*ck*ed up, which is in MINT condition, but I think I will be keepinging this and offing that one... That's how nice this machine is to use!

old MacBook Pro are amazing value. I will take an old MacBook Pro 10yrs old over any bottom range Pc. Even mid range I’d rather use an old mac.

I'm using the Catalina patching tool DosDude1 came up with on this, which means I could possibly have at least 3-4 years of security updates... Assuming they follow the same update pattern they have in the past and assuming no patcher is made for Big Sir.

I used a newer MacBook Air just to see how it was and the screen was flimsy and the keyboard sucked to type on, but that is a MBA. I was looking at brand new MacBooks but I just couldn't take myself to put up the money or financing for one... But I sure would like a 16" MacBook Pro.

Like you amgff84, I just upgraded my 17 inch mid 2010 MacBook Pro that I had not used in over 2 years. I bought it from Apple in August 2010. I installed a new 500G SSD and 8G of RAM. I also installed Catalina. I cannot believe the speed increase and most of all the display is beautiful. This machine should last another 3 for 4 years.

Agreed. It's not terrible for sure. The value for money in this machine is insane with the display for i7.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between running the last officially supported OS on this which is High Sierra and the unsupported Catalina. I'm aware of the non metal gpu, but what other differences are there and what allows the machine to work without that gpu, is it increasing the cpu workload? I feel the machine is fine with Catalina, but High Sierra was a good OS too
