I love these threads where the OP has to justify to himself why he/she made a decision by making a forum post.

Justify? sorry for wasting your time reading my pov on why I decided not to replace my 2010. I'm just sharing what I think is right for me. Other, more mature contributors might understand this post better than you, no need to try to analyze my motives.

this.
I read on this forum and see people thinking that their 1 year old laptop/computer is obsolete.

I have the 17" 2010 version and i really dont care/need the extra power. My days of focusing on only specs and speeds are behind me.

My 2010 mbp allows me to use indesin, photoshop, and illustrator. Good enough for me. I might just max out the ram at 8gb

i know a lot of people who sold/got rid of their 2010 macbooks just for sb because they want a faster processor to....surf the internet with

Late-2008 MacBook Pro owner, I will probably skip 2011 because...

wait for it...

it still works perfectly fine and it does what I need it to do!

It's not normal to buy a new laptop every year.....
Having a 2010 MacBook is a good enough reason to not get a 2011 (even 2012) MacBook.

Thats a silly thing to say. Jealous? There are a lot of people for who twice the speed is a big deal. For those people TB is also probably a big deal. Plus if you have the money why not? If you use it for work and that kind of speed makes a difference its a no brainer.
I buy a new laptop and desktop every year and have for some time. I want the latest thing, an up to date warranty, and because the laptop isn't very old I get a very good price for it. I also have the disposable income to do it.

Bravo, good for you, if you really have the use for it and you need every bit of power from that beast then go for it. I respect that but to each his own, no need to think someone is jealous if he or she thinks otherwise. Studies actually show that you tend to be happier if you have fewer material goods in your possession, just keeping things that you really have use for.

I would say it's not normal to tell someone what are "normal" computer buying habits. :)

The 2010 machine is a great machine, however the 2011 15" are nearly 70% faster than their 2010 counterparts. Even the 13" macbook pro Geekbench's faster than the 2010 17" model.

I don't see why some people keep their machines for 3-4 years, however I'm not going to call you guys with the dinosour 2010 model not normal :).

You obviously know that your computer isn't on the same level as the 2011s. You also seem to know that yours is an incredible machine. The money that I just spent for my 2011 is breathtaking to say the least. >$2k is a hell of a lot for a solid piece of metal and circuitry (albeit, I'd be lying if I said I have another electronic that I favor more).

Point being - You have an awesome computer, I agree with the first post... you don't need another one for a long time unless you start to get some performance issues.

What Does This Mean ?

It never ceases to amaze me how often I see "prolly" on this forum.

This is the _only_ place I see it.

My question is, what is a prolly ?

1) A type of hard drive I've never heard of?
2) Some strain of the flu?
3) An STD?
4) A type of ram memory?
5) A way to increase gas mileage?

This is Probably a long shot, but I'm guessing uh...*

oh never mind :) :)

Dude, its okay.
I have a 2007 HP desktop with an integrated NVidia GeForce 8400 GS, (now upgraded to my ATI 5750 so i could play sc2) and a Processor anthlonx2 2.33GHz.
My monitor has tons of scratches, and my PC is running smooth.
When will I get my new Mac? This summer baby... im just waiting for a MBA with SB or just the 13 with Lion.
But seriously on topic, you probably dont need to upgrade a computer every 6 years.
My computer does its job. and yours does too.

My thought process goes in line with the OP's almost entirely. I sold my 2010 13" for a great price, basically got more than what I paid for it =)

anyway, was all ready to purchase a base 15" until it was announced. I felt a little underwhelmed at $2000. I'm not naive, I know how far $2000 goes and for my uses I couldn't justify the cost. I love OSX and the unibody MBP's but I don't think it was worth a base + hi-res AG which was what I wanted. So thankfully for the 2011 release the 2010's price dropped really nicely. Picked up the 15" in my sig for $1500 straight up, included 8GB ram, I added in the SSD. The $500 I saved I am tossing toward an iPad and accessories for the mbp.

So OP, I totally get what you're saying. Since the 6490 is on par with the 330m, I'm really only missing out on the i7-qm which is great, but with my uses, a highly clocked i7 dual works out well too for WoW and SC2.

Good thinking! Your new setup must scream with the SSD, now that is something I will be adding sometime later this year!
