Worth the wait?

Wikipedia (I know it's the most trustable source :D) says Q1 '10? Anyway, any chance that Apple uses Becktons?

I have a Dual 2.3GHz G5 PowerMac. Is it worth the wait for Q1 2010 or perhaps May, 2010 for the possibility of a Becktron or Gulf??? Mac Pro, or should I purchase a refurb 4-core now?

I realize there are many factors to consider in making this decision, but in general, will the future Mac Pros blow the current Mac Pros out of the water? I don't buy computers often, and want to be sure my next purchase will be functionally current for many years.

There always something newer and better just months away..

If your current is OK, wait. Also, you can buy refurb now and sell it when new one comes. You won't lose much if you go that route

Clearly, the current MP design is great, but wouldn't it be nice to have a new design? The entire range is going unibody and the current MP looks like the older Powerbook/MBP aluminium design.

Whenever it's coming, it's going to be miles better than the current design, despite how much you all think the current design is.

Okay thanks. Maybe Apple can get 'em earlier as they did with Nehalems?
Possibly.

The really pessimistic prediction would be, since Gulftown is an addition to the line like Clovertown was with Woodcrest, Apple just adds a Gulftown to the line and keeps everything else pretty much the same.

Sounds possible. Since iMacs aren't getting quad-core yet, it doesn't sound reasonable to have 6 and 12 core Mac Pro and dual core iMac.

Becktons and Gulftowns are coming in Q1 2010. Becktons have 8 cores and Gulftowns 6 cores. Next Mac Pro will have another, I'm leaning towards Gulftown because it's manufactured using 32nm process which gives better performance etc.

That, and Apple has never used the 7xxx series, of which Beckton belongs.

Maybe easier RAM/Hard drive access, and a new case design.

YES. If Apple gave the Mac Mini a little RAM door and a tray for the hard drive similar to the Mac Pro drive trays...

No more xMac complaints. :D

No. :p

There's just no point. If they made the tanj thing just a bit longer, we could have more RAM slots and perhaps a fifth HDD bay, but we don't need anything else.

Of course anything new would be absolutely spectacular, but we don't need it; it's not the point of the machine.

That's true. Why? Price? Lower clock speeds?

I agree. I don't understand the thing of redesigning. It can be uglier than current is.

I dont think I could afford to wait until May '10 for the newest chips. Its always my luck I buy something in September and they come out with a new one in a month or two later! Best time to buy the new Pro Mac would be when??? Anyone have any suggestions?

It's a Mac Pro. Not the other way around.
