i got the 2011 13" i5 macbook pro the day they were released and i love it.
get the i5, you're better off spending the $300 on ssd / ram.

Aaaaaand... Which one did you end up getting?

the i5. There is no way i would ever get the i7. Not that its bad or anything but the cost isn't worth it for me. the i5 does plenty what I need it to do and I just dropped $200 on a SSD so its blazing fast!

I would go with the I7 since you cannot change this later on. Then in 2-3 months buy an SSD - best of both worlds.

Very interesting. Which SSD did you buy? Can you give me a few examples of how it performed before and after the SSD went in?

To explain, I just bought the same 2011 i5. I have a spare Intel 80GB X25M drive and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth opening the MacBook to swap it in.

I just got the i5 13" and it is definitely faster than my 2010 C2D is. Contemplating putting 8gb into but at the moment I don't think I need the additional memory

the way i see it, would be to get the base 13".
and if you were to get the high end 13", then might as well get the base 15".
the only models i would purchase would be base 13", or base 15".
and if i wanted a badass computer i would get the upgraded 15" and max it out, but would never get the 17".

i contemplated getting the i7 but i got the i5 and i do not regret it one bit.

It is a lot faster. I find myself rebooting if anything goes wrong or just to do it because it loads up so fast. No internet? Reboot. Page not found? Reboot. haha
But seriously, everything loads 1 bump, chrome safari, ichat ,etc. Instant. Runs much faster. Copying and installing things are much faster.

Honestly, I put in my cloned hard drive and I could not go back, it is SO slow. Like the entire computer is downgraded.

If you have a SSD, it'll take you less than 3 minutes to swap it in. It's not hard AT ALL. Unscrew the 10 screws, take the bottom cover off. On the top right, unscrew 2 black screws, remove the black holding piece. Remove the SATA connection.
Use a torx screw and unscrew the 4 screws from the harddrive and put them on the SSD, install SATA. Put cover on. Really easy and def worth it.

I got my 2011 i7 last week, put a 7200RPM 750GB and 8GB of DDR3 in it.

Is damn fast, handbrake is about 3 times faster to convert video.

I am just absolutely astounded at the speed of this machine, am loving it, and will probably install parallels to test windows VMs and their speed.

You should try craigslist. Well ig uess it would depend on your location but mine moved in a matter of a day at $1000. It was in pristine condition with warranty though.

Does your MBP 2011 have the fan constantly running when browsing? My fan is at 5000 rpm and CPU is at 82 degrees with nothing other than chrome (5 tabs, no videos).

That is a cause for concern. My computer has gotten to and beyond that temperature, but it usually involves video, flash, or pushing it in Google Earth. All you have open is 5 tabs in Chrome without a video among them? No other apps open?

my fans dont ever come on unless installing a big program like SC2 or playing some games other than it idles around 42 degrees C and hands 1080p video playback no problem.

heres the geekbench for the comp in my sig. its perfect for me and i will use it for about 2 years then upgrade and hopefully the 13" model might see discrete graphics by then.

Dude, what will you do with 250 dollars seriously?
the difference between a MBP 2010 and 2011 is 250 dollars. Unless you need an iPod touch or other stuff, i feel like 250 investment is good enough to make ur laptop future proof.
