Which is the better machine? Thanks. I'd love a 15 cMBP though. :)

It depends on your needs. One has a faster CPU and GPU and a larger screen, the other is lighter, has a retina screen and better battery life.
There's always something I'm not going to have. :(

If you value long term use, I would go newer. Depending on your climate, the logic board in an older machine can dry out.

I'd say the 2015 is the better machine by a significant margin. Retina display, better and faster ports, far better support for external displays, faster Wi-Fi, faster Bluetooth, better trackpad, lighter, longer battery life, comes with warranty.

And perhaps most significantly, the 2015's GPU won't go dead all of a sudden.

The 2011 does have the more powerful CPU, though.

2011 15" MPB is a POS, dump that thing before GPU dies.
- I agree with your overall point, and even made much the same one myself above. But to call the 2011 machine a PoS is perhaps a bit extreme. I've gotten 5 good years out of mine so far (with a logic board replacement, true) and fully expect to keep it as my primary machine until at the very least the beginning of 2018 when my coverage for the video issues expires, and quite possibly longer.

I'd say wait till March and see if Apple will refresh the 13" rMBP. It's just around the corner. You won't regret it.

OP, you are a brave man for considering the 2011 15" MBP. I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. Apple didn't start a repair program for nothing.
