I would be probably most helpful if the people with 2011MBP could simply post fan speed and CPU temps (in C) for different load levels.

Stuff like any of these:
Idle
a little moultitasking.
watching a youtube video
watching a avi standard video
watching some HD content

and heavy stuff.
Like a itunes import or imovie import.
encode of some video file.

gaming in bootcamp and or OSX

has anyone disabled the auto switching for the graphics card? If flash isn't enough to cause the card to 'switch' and it is just using the onboard graphics - that might explain why the CPU is so high and needs cooling.

Still waiting to hear more about the fan...
does anyone have the 13" i5 or the 15" baseline?

I have a friend with the 15" baseline and I just used the computer for about 2 hours.
The fan did not come on at all under web browsing and light hulu watching, and when I tested Bioshock, and it was just a tad louder than my 15" with the 2.5 i5 and the 330m.

I have the new 17" Thunderbolt Macbook Pro

The fans fire quite a bit and seem more noticeable by far than my Dual Core 15" MBP I got 2 years back. However, it must be stated that I use it in clam shell mode most of the time connected to a 30" monitor.

Hope that helps.

don't like the fan noise

greetings to the group - I joined the group to post this for you.

I have 2010 17" 2.66 GHz i7 and just bought a 2011 2.2 GHz Quad, and I can tell you, the fan noise is noticeably loud when I use Logic (my main application unfortunately).

Using Firefox, iCal, Address Book, iTunes, iPhoto, etc. run quietly. And overall, the applications, including Logic, run much faster. And boot-up and application start-up times are amazingly fast.

But the fan noise when I'm using Logic is almost a deal killer at this point. I'm considering returning it, it's that bad.

I haven't tried turning off one of the graphics cards, as someone suggested. That's a possibility, but really? Apple, can you figure this out? Do you realize that the CPU-heavy apps are why we bought your new machines, and two main ones are Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro - both applications where quiet operation is critical.

Would welcome any instructions for turning off the graphics card and/or any other suggestions and experiences from other users.

forgot to add...

I have a 480GB SSD which is also helping with speed, and I love it. It has no fan noise.

But again, the CPU fan noise with Logic almost negates those gains as well.

On my 13", I don't hear the fan until it gets over 3K RPM. I manage it constantly as needed with SMC Fan Control.

I had the 2010 and now 2011 and no, the 2011 is not any more loud than the 2010 during normal use. It does get pretty lively however, when playing games, but that is to be expected.
