Congrats, thats actually makes me relieved an Apple Store took care of a problem rather than corporate.

Sounds like a great place to do business. enjoy your new machine!

Thats why I buy nothing but Apple. The great customer service along with quality products is hard to find in other brands. I think I might be a fanboy. :D

Perhaps. Their hush money (err laptop) made me happy, and given the situation, that's all that matters. I wouldn't have sued, but had this had a different ending, everyone who saw this thread may have slightly different thoughts about Apple, which could have influenced future purchases. A company taking care of a customer is beneficial for all parties.

Good work, gixxer!

Your experience at that second Apple Store was much more in line with the experiences I've had with them. So at least now I know which location to avoid the next time I'm in the Seattle area. ;)

Enjoy the new laptop--I have a feeling that screen will grow on you.

Glad you got it resolved OP! Just like johnnylarue said, I have a feeling that screen will eat you alive and never spit you back out though. I have serious doubts you can ever go back to regular screens after you get used to that haha.

Just returned from the Bellevue Apple Store, in a much better mood.

Went in, got a genius (Ken) who was unrushed, and attentive, and told him the story. He listened, and was respectful the entire time. I told him directly I was not interested in repair and if there were any other options. I specifically asked if I could do a credit for the cost of the repair towards another computer. The repair actually ended up being quoted for $755!

He went to talk to his manager for quite some time, came back, and presented me with two options: The credit towards another computer (what I had asked for), or a brand new machine. After my experience with University district, I was NOT expecting this. Given the nature of the incident, they exchanged my 2011 MBP 17" with a 15" Retina MBP! I personally went up to the manager and thanked him. Extremely friendly, and actually gave me the time of day. I'm not a very aggressive/direct person, so this was much more than I was hoping for.

The specs on the new machine are:

15-inch: 2.7GHz
with Retina display
2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz
16GB 1600MHz memory
512GB flash storage1

They also threw in a $50 gift card! I asked for none of this, just a small credit towards a new computer, but given the incident, Ken (genius), and Kevin (manager) were more than happy to help me.

Alls well that ends well, I suppose. I managed to cut up and clean up the carpet to where you can't even tell there was damage. Thank you for everyone who posted in this thread convincing me to not settle, and get my butt into an Apple store. I honestly would NOT have gone in had the people in this thread not posted.

It is very strange that one Apple Store had such terrible service, where another one was more than happy to keep and satisfy a customer. Especially in a situation where much more grave consequences could have happen.

All that being said.. shall I crack her open? :)

Honestly, I loved my 2011. The 17" screen, tons of ports, and DVD drive were all very appealing to me. But I'd rather have this 15" that hopefully won't catch fire than a computer that does.

your repair cost was gonna be 755 and they gave you a $2800 machine instead??!?!?!?!?!?!

DAMN.

Apple has never released any sort of documentation saying that you can't leave your MBP plugged in while you sleep.

This. I did a VERY large backup to a very slow network drive that took 32 hours. Woulda been hard to do if i couldnt leave computer on overnight.

Anyways, congrats to the OP. I actually recommended the bellevue apple store in the thread on macforums. Theyve always taken care of me.

I saw that. Thank you very much.

I am very glad for you. As long as you're satisfied, that's what it's all about. This reaffirms my faith in Apple Customer Service. (Or at least their training).

Labor Day Weekend. Not all employees are equal during the holidays. Even at that, it often depends on where you go and who you talk to. (That's life).

congratz,

apple fixed it. enjoy your machine. I have the same but i really miss the 17"
:)

congrats on the new computer

you wont be disappointed

Thanks. Can anyone shed some insight on how different resolutions / scaling affect performance? 1440x is obviously an exact scaling of 2880x. Does this mean using 1920x will have more overhead since it doesn't scale evenly?

I find 1920x to be great looking. 1680x is the odd ball even though I preferred it. 2880/1440 = 2 but 2880/1920=1.5 so not that oddball of a scale...generally speaking I use 1920x all the time now. Congrats BTW!

1920x definitely looks the best.

How is compared to the MBP 17" 1920x1200?

I´m thinking of make a switch to a rMBP 15" from a MBP 17" late 2011, but I´m afraid if it gets very small.

At 1920x, I don't even notice the screen size difference. The transition was completely seamless. Just the fact that the resolution is the same makes it seem like that exact same computer. Although it looks much nicer, lighter, more comfortable in general. I have no qualms with the size of taskbars / txt, etc at 1920x.

apple are great in satisfying customers it all depends on the place you go to get service. Anyways how are you finding the retina?

I'm enjoying it, although I've found that UI lag has been terrible.

Apart from that the screen is great and the computer is great. The only faults I find are the obvious. (lack of ports, dvd drive, and the aforementioned UI lag)
