There were no 4.x" Android phones yet, thus staying at 3.5" was not such a big deal (nor were there LTE or NFC Android phones). The main points of criticism of the iPhone 4s that are backed up by arguments (ie, excluding those that say it should look different for the sake of being different) are exactly these:
  • No 4.x" screen
  • No LTE
  • No NFC
Of course whether these are really important points in the market is another question.
In addition to what MrNomNom mentioned, there is a plethora of evidence showing really poor battery performance for 4G devices; the current generation of 4G chipsets are very power hungry. Tim Cook alluded earlier this year to this shortcoming as a "design compromise" that Apple was not willing to make.

Concerning NFC, the adoption of this technology on a global basis has been hampered by the inability of various agencies and organizations to settle on a single standard.

The Japanese already have FeliCa, why would they move to something unproven? The US has nothing. Heck, I can't even pay for SF parking with my Clipper Card. Gee, let me try my Clipper Card on the NYC subway system and let's see how well that works.

4" Android phones are just bloated iPhones.
LTE isn't here yet, and the chipsets race through batteries.
NFC is of doubtful use, and it's not even clear if that will be the winning protocol.

I know more and more people with 4"+ phones. They love them. Just as it was clear that Apple would eventually have a CDMA phone, there's also no doubt in my mind that eventually Apple will have a bigger screen available.

I'm mostly outside of LTE coverage, so I turn it off to save battery. When I'm in coverage though, woo man is it fast.

LTE power usage is like getting worse gas mileage when youu kick into a car's accelerator pedal. So what. It's nice having the capability when you want it, otherwise just take it easy.

My kids in Florida say they use NFC all the time to pay for things at (I believe) their Seven Elevens.

We also used it this weekend to transfer things between Samsung phones. Just hold them near each other and click the screen.

We all eventually get dragged kicking and screaming into the future :)

This is Great

This is Great that Apple has released a good amount of items this year that I think will help in development of further Apple Products, even though people were expecting the iPhone 5 and we got the iPhone 4S we were at least lucky to get the 4S and some of the features displayed in the 4S can help us make future predictions about the future of Apple's Products. It is also great that this year we have ended with so many new Apple Products and now that this year is over we can start predicting what Apple will bring to us in 2012 such as a possible iPad 3 and Apple TV

Even though this year was great, Apple has suffered one of the greatest loses being its founder Steve Jobs

Im amazed that bar story made the list. Im guessing Steve was wrong. 2011 clearly was the year of the lime marinaded shrimp ceviche.

The lime-marinated shrimp ceviche was my leak of the year. I'm just sad it never materialised.

than what actually happened.

Oh you didn't tell us that you were there and you saw and here everything that happened. You must have been because you know 'what actually happened'

Fraud happens all the time. People post things on Facebook, Linked In etc that aren't true (and then take it down after there has been enough time for someone to find it), they say things that aren't true as well. This guy could have said he was an Apple Employee and they called and asked "Do you have an employee named Anthony Colon" and were told yes. But no one bothered to ask what department to find out that he is the dish guy in the cafeteria. Or perhaps that is the name of an investigator but the guy that showed up isn't really Anthony Colon just borrowed his name. Apple employees give out their business cards all the time so how hard would it be to fake one and have someone believe it was real. It looks just like the ones the store staff give out all the time. Add a fake ID and have your fun.

And said prototype never leaked out, rather suspect a detail since it was in the wild for apparently a good 24 hours before the heat was turned on. That's plenty of time for Sergio to have taken photos etc, sold them and gotten rid of the evidence. Or just sold the whole phone. I'm sure Mac Rumors would have paid for it but been smart enough to keep their mouths shut about the source of the info.

Agreed.

How was it that the reception for the 4S was so "negative" while the 3GS was still seen as a step forward?

Because it wasn't the iPhone 5. THe rumor mill got everyone so built up on that one that anything less than that became trash.

Which then let the rumor mill start a whole new thing about how Apple was going to release the 5 but Steve's dying wish was to wait because it wasn't quite good enough, blah blah blah

iPad 2 sure looks ugly from the back.
