2011 iMac 5.1 Surround Sound??

is it possible to get 5.1 surround sound through the thunderbolt port on the new iMac? - I have bought a mini display to HDMI adapter to connect it to my TV and then from my TV out to my speaker system via optical. I used HDMI previously on my Mac Mini but didnt get 5.1 sound
