with CL I am able to boot with one of my internal HDD which has 10.11 (attached) but I can not boot with HS in ssd as the display breaks. Can I option + boot to avoid CL and see or will I loose the CL boot too that way.

Edit: I removed the CL USB and booted to a black screen. With and without option pressed.

In CL I selected Pre-Boot (HS in SSD)and it also went to black screen towards end of startup progress bar.

I plugged the USB back and booted and got CL boot screen.

Stuck in the loop....
I am far from expert here but did you follow point by point what's explained in the spoiler "A Short Plan of the Complete Hardware Upgrade Process" of the first post ?.
Did you boot your computer to High Sierra using a second display plugged in the mini port and without Catalina Loader ?

As far as i know it was a company machine and it was never serviced before. It's the base model, so not a CTO. But i just googled the part number and looks like some of these imacs had an 8pin vsync cable that connects to the logic board instead of the display. Anyway, its interesting :) At least i know what this unlabelled connector does on the logic board, i always wondered about the use of that.
Half your luck 👍 1 less cable to detach when upgrading your gpu 😜

Anyone seen this cable before? Its from a 2011 27" iMac, 2 pipe heatsink. It connects directly into this unlabelled connector on the logic board. I've taken apart a few iMacs before, but i never seen this cable, it always coming from the display and connects to the LED backlight board.

I had the same question when reassembling the iMAC and looked at the Apple Repair Manual.
It's the Backlight Power connector, mentioned as unused as no backlight on display.

Hello there. What about installation of MXM 3B R9 M290X in iMac Late 2009 with Core i5-750? I saw nothing about vintage AMD cards on first GCN (in particular, tremont) in this thread and i want to know is it possible and what problems will i probably face. So, what do you think?
Likely no DRM an no Apple TV. It is worth an experiment but I had only one shot I would go with the Polaris+ cards having full software support by Apple.

The AGC patch is included in some Big Sur patchers... you just need to find out in which. And it is a plist patch, not a replacement with older versions.
I found the original patch method here, and applied it successfully to match my specific board-id. And now displayport works! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

For people on Google: macOS Big Sur AppleGraphicsControl AGC patch black screen

Why do you think there'll be no DRM and Apple TV (TV+, I suppose?)? I thought, modern iMacs with Retina displays get most of modern features. Or it will be caused by software issues with installing not proper graphics crad? By the way, where you got your RX480 and how much did it cost? I don't mind moving to it)

OK I am a little nervous...

System 2011 iMac i5-2500 16GB RAM, newly istalled 780M with BR3 vBIOS from nicky22, High Sierra.

Seemed to work great. Ran Unigine Heaven fine, results as expected. Same with Geekbench 5 Metal.

I then tried with Valley and left it. Came back and it had restarted with a kernel panic crash report (below).

I then tried Valley again. I stepped away just for a moment and heard it shut down. There was the grey screen "your computer restarted because of a problem" error with green vertical lines! Ahhhh! Panic. Shut it down. I guess it is overheating so would benefit from copper shims...but have I already nuked the card if I got the green lines?!?

Here's the panic report:

May be. Have you installed additional radiators on VRAM chips?

NO I haven't just modded the 3pipe heatsink i bought and used thermal paste...
Sorry, false alarm. It's not needed in case you use big heatsink. But overheat is quite possible caused отвал (i don't know how is it in English. Your chip or VRAM spaired from board). Where you bought that card?

ebay from an alienware computer apparently. Ran Heaven fine so presumably not a duff card. I could see tiny gap betweem chip and coper plate on heatsink but i thought the die was touching anway but maybe not...

Ok, looks fine. duff = your chip or VRAM spaired from board? I'm not quite good in English specific PC terms)

This leeds me to a question.

I have installed a K2100M last week-end. I used MX-2 (already had it) for the GPU and K5-Pro for the VRAM chips that touch the heatsink. But this card has VRAM chips on both sides of the board. It passed several benchmark tests, some games without any problems. Should I bother installing some additional cooling for those chips (not a lot of space). Or just leave it like that?

I suppose, you should. Anyway, it will increase lifetime of VRAM and card at all.
