Yeah, I went to the local Apple store and dled geekbench on the new entry 13 and I was stunned at the score which hovered around high 8000s

I am surprised so many folks are cribbing about how the new release is not allowing them to play a old game in medium settings. There is no way an upgrade can satisfy all corner cases. Macbook pro 13" has never been a gaming laptop. This CPU is a Humongous upgrade compared to core 2 duo. Plus once we have software on OSX that support QuickSync we will see dramatic improvements in encoding/decoding task as well.

Only thing I am surprised is battery life donwgrade despite using 32nm sandy bridge with integrated gfx. Most windows laptops using these chips have shown dramatic battery life increases(HP/Thinkpad are advertising 32/30hrs with extended slice !!!! ). I am thinking apple is being conservative with these laptops. It would be good to see independent battery life benchmarks from users/sites.

For the guy saying that the 13" isn't for "real" pro users... What?

Maybe if you are a pro-gamer.. The i7 beats the **** out the core2duo for rendering and decoding stuff

just wanted to give my comparison:

i have a 2010 13" MBP : 320m, 8GB RAM and 7200rpm drive, and with geek bench (32bit) i hit 3380.

i wish they had updated to the i5's last year. im pretty gutted!

I really hope the guy does some more CPU tests. The 13" is indeed no gaming platform and I think GPU isn't that important in day to day use as some people keep saying.

As a filmmaker, I would really like to see a video encoding test.

Hey I did a short encoding test... check out instructions I followed and my average fps.. not sure how else to test it =)

Same here... I hope in the next 2012 MBP they update the resolution. 1280x800 is getting a little long in the tooth. This isn't 2006.

Cod and re5 benchmarks

Hi i am from Turkey. And i am medical student in Turkey. I dont want to open new thread so i ask my question here.

I will buy my first macbook. I waited refresh for two months.

I use my macbook pro for:

Web browsing. Social networks. vs...
Read categorize my ebook(pdf, cdr, etc...)
Watch video (generally 720p) ( And i want to connect my tv 40"samsung to watch movie vs...)
Photo Editing, categorize vs... Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Lightroom ( I have a dslr machine and i take too much photos and i want to organize them.)
Microsoft office( I want to prepare word excell and ppt file)
I want to play little games like crazy birds, machinarum (flash based)

I am thinking to buy 1200 dolar macbook pro 13" is it enough for me?

Yes.

I just brought my new MBP 13" home from Best Buy. I had bought a 2010 13" exactly two weeks ago and was still under warranty ;). Haven't gotten to use it too much but what I did notice was the keyboard feels different. I can't describe it but it feels more broken in or something idk...

BUT, I downloaded firefox (naturally) and it took about 45 seconds. I remember doing this on my 2010 13" and it took a few minutes. Proof its faster already. I'm pretty stoked

Totally agree.

cpu wise the new base 13" beats every single 2010 MBP including the 15" and 17". Based on this that means if people thought the 2010 MBP's were awesome pro machines then that by default makes the 2011 13" an awesome pro machine. Sure it is the slowest new one but that doesn't equal useless. If pros thought they had the best machine ever to get there work done a year ago then there is no reason why the 2011 13" cannot do the same.

Just look at it this way. Not everybody that already has a 2010 15" or 17" is going to upgrade right away. That means if two designers work at a company and one has a 2010 17" and the other a 13" 2011 they will be about equal in terms of cpu performance.

Not all forms of design need a killer gpu either.

Most Adobe design applications such as Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash don't use the gpu at all. They only really use the cpu. Photoshop only uses the gpu a little bit and the higher shared ram of the Intel 3000 may actually help Photoshop. After Effects can make use of the gpu for complex compositing but it isn't needed. I run After Effects on a Nvidia 9400 and it works great for most stuff. Premiere will not have CUDA support but then again none of the mobile gpu's are supported with their mercury playback engine anyway so the gpu isn't really used all that much.

Final Cut Studio. FCP, DVD Studio Pro, Compressor and Sountrack Pro do not use the gpu at all. Motion and Color do use the gpu but again both work fairly well on my Nvidia 9400. Sure they could be better but I can still get work done and I do work full time at a production company with deadlines.

Cinema 4D and Blender. They work well on my Nvidia 9400. Yeah they could be better for complex stuff but you really have to do some wicked 3D stuff to need a gpu beyond the basics. We sometimes animate models of engines for clients that have over 100,000,000 polygons. Those projects would choke on this gpu but really how many of you buying a 13" are doing that level of 3D work.

Screen size. Yeah it is a problem but it can work. The beauty of a MBP is the one thing that can be enhanced is the monitor. If you really need the space buy a cheap 21" monitor for the heavy work. Honestly when it comes to design work I find 1440x900 to be just as limiting as 1280x800. In fact when it comes to video editing I don't care how big a monitor is, I really need two. In my opinion two 1280x800 monitors for editing is much better then one huge 1920x1200 monitor.

straight out of the box.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this. Same thing, had my 2010 MBP for a little over two weeks, exchanged it at best buy last night, and the first thing I noticed was that the keyboard felt different. However I chalked this up to my overly critical nature, but Im glad someone has validated my first impression.

They keyboard on this is amazing.

This thread is so full of funny, pointless scenarios and benchmarks that it makes me laugh.

An install test? Seriously? The processor has very little to do with copying files from a DVD to your hard drive. So pointless...

Firefox downloaded faster? The 2011's have the same wireless card as the 2010's, your processor isn't going to speed up your internet connection...once again, pointless.

Not bashing the upgrade, if you're not into games, this is an awesome upgrade. But pulling out random events or procedures and calling them "benchmarks" is just stupid. Stick to geekbench/3dm06, those are actual benchmarks of the hardware performance.

what kind of programs do i live problem with intel hd 3000 graphic card? I dont play games on my macbook. But i will use photoshop write web codes (html, css,,, etc.) Maybe i use for video encoding.

Perhaps someone with the new 13.3" MacBook Pro can run the OpenGL Extension Viewer?

http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/

I'd be interested to know the percentage support for OpenGL 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 for these new Intel IGPs. Hopefully it'll be comparable to current ATI and nVidia GPUs in OS X which are at 22/23 for OpenGL 3.0, 1/8 for 3.1, and 3/9 for 3.2.

Anyone by chance install Windows 7 to a boot camp partition and run the Windows Experience Index benchmark on this new 2011 13" MBP? Just curious. Thanks!

I ran a test with the software and anything 3.0+ failed. The only thing that passed was 2.1 and older.

However under core features, 3.0 was 18/23, 3.1 was 1/8 and 3.2 was 3/9.

One thing that bugs me is how does a few people already have this model (13in i7), but have a higher geekbench than me? Is it because they use 64-bit and I run 32-bit (no license)?

Yes

Lol the 2011 MBP 13" cannot be slower than the 2010 version. The 2nd Gen i5 blows the Core 2 Duo out of the water, where as the graphics are VERY SLIGHTLY (if not equal) lower than the 320M. So... BIG CPU boost + (arguably) TINY GPU decrease = overall increase
