Have you had any GPU hardware problems with your 2011 Macbook Pro?

My early-2011 MBP just started this today. Doesn't even boot now.

Didn't even know about this problem until I searched based on my laptop's symptoms!

Early 2011 17" MBP; graphics card started failing this week. Will take it in to Apple once I get my new-to-me refurb set up to see if the out of AppleCare repair is free/affordable.

Had the early 2011, with SSD and optibay also installed 8 gb of ram.

The gpu broke recently around new years and i sold it for parts.

Mine (early 2011 17 inch) has been having random shut down issues for 18 months or so now when under stress.

It did this again at the weekend, but now wont turn back on at all. Tried various things to get it going again, but no luck. So I'm off to my local Apple store in the next couple of days to see what they say. My apple care unfortunately ran out almost a year ago so I'm hoping they're kind to me.

You've got the sale of goods act on your side, so you have a fighting chance. I got given the reason that they could fix mine out of Applecare because I bought it from Apple and the law allowed for them to fix it because it was still within the expected time frame that the laptop should work.

First off I believe the best fix if one decides to continue using a perfectly fine and last of the 17" Apple pros is to get the card re-balled with LEAD solder and opt to have the GPU replaced during this operation.

My question stems from the GPU replacement, that is: is it possible to replace the GPU in my case a 6750m with the later 6770m?

Yes. Mind suddenly crashed in April 2014 as I was working on finals. It took a week to have the logic board replaced under Apple Care. It crashed again in June 2014. Apple replaced with a 2013 15" rMBP with 750m.

Yes, you can, if you find someone suitable to do it.

Mine is a 3.5yr old Early 2011 model of the 15" MBP (i7 2.2Ghz, 1GB VRAM, retail $2,499), and it is currently on its third logic board, second keyboard topcase, and second display. The logic board had to be replaced around a year old, and again earlier this year.

I don't expect Apple to give a ---- but I think this laptop was one of the lousiest purchasing decisions I've ever made, and I truly regret buying it.

I didn't know about this problem until it hit me almost 2 weeks ago. Bought a mid-2011 15" i7 2.5ghz 750gb drive in early 2012 and it worked great until 2 weeks ago. The unit crashed and would not reboot. After researching the symptoms, I learned about the GPU issue, and sure enough, that was the problem. Luckily I had about 20 days left on my AppleCare. They sent my computer out, but after a week, they still didn't get the parts in. They offered to give me a rMBP i7 2.5ghz 512SSD as a replacement. I accepted that offer and they sent my old computer back. The Apple Store allowed me to take my old computer home to back it up, and when I came back to do the exchange, they wound up giving me an rMBP 2.8ghz 1tb SSD unit. I was so surprised and so happy! Only thing missing is the matte screen, but I'm not complaining!

I never bought AppleCare. The MBP was 18 months out of warranty when it failed and I had no issues after talking to them reasonably.

My early MacBook Pro 2011 revived itself today.

I got a early MacBook Pro 2011 that failed October 2014. I could always turn it on and access the hard drive as file sharing was activated.

For a couple of days I was working on getting the files of the machine. When I turned it on tonight it suddenly started fine. After login it showed me an error message saying something about a Graphic problem occurred and if I wanted to report the issue. I did.

If someone tells me where this report is saved than I am happy to post it, as long as it does not contain personal data.

So we are pretty much SOL? Just waiting around for it to no longer work?

i dont see a lot of sense in putting money into a new motherboard that may last a few weeks, a few years, or anything in between.

This really is such a shame, as i dont feel like my MBP needs to be replaced, but it sure sounds like it does :/

Have you tried to see if Apple will replace it? Usually the CRU (Customer Replacement Unit) is available after three major repairs, and you've had 7. I'd at least ask and see, especially if you've spent a ton out of pocket.

No problem with GPU here. Logic board was replaced a couple months back due to FW800 problems. So i guess i have "more time" before GPU will start to fail.

But, friend of mine got problems and his GPU failed. On the good side, he now own top end retina 15 MBP. :)
