Almost by accident, found a cheap solution.

What do you need?

- 2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 with failed AMD GPU
- Displaylink USB 3.0 adaptor
- Install drivers (tested in El capitan https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/macos )

A usb 3.0 port is supposed to be needed, but with the 2.0 ports works pretty good

There is a LOT of cheap displaylink docks in ebay

Why by accident? I was using a Kengsiston Displaylink dock with my 2012 MBP 13" (non retina), to get 2 external displays, and ask myself... what would happen if i run this dock in my failed AMD GPU MBP 15"?

There you go:

I ended up buying a Targus DisplayLink dock off of eBay for $20. Installed the drivers from displaylink.com, restarted, and so far everything works like a charm.

Currently screen spanning via HDMI port on hub, using built in USB 2.0 on early 2011 MBP 15" w/bad graphics. Performance is markedly better than anything I was able to get through Airplay.

Thanks for the heads up, this is great!
