If you buy the 2011 MBP now, you can justify buying the 2014 MBP in 3 years. If you wait until 2012, you'll also have to wait until 2015 to justify buying your next MBP.

If you buy new computers more frequently than every three years, Greenpeace puts you on their black list, and hounds you more often and more vigorously. Or at least that's what I imagine would happen. You don't want that.

Unless you do what I do and give the old ones to family members :)

Next MBP will look like the MBA. Most of apple products have the curved sidewalls. Just think of it as a MBA in a 15" or 17". Buy now and enjoy it. Watch next year your going to want a feature only the 15" and 17" MBP have and you will continue to wait because the 13" doesn't have it yet. T will happen, it always does.

I was going to buy the unibody when it came out in October, 2008. I decided not to at that time because I couldn't justify spending the additional money on a MacBook vs. a PC so I spent half the money and got a Windows 7 HP machine. I have regretted that decision every day since then and am getting ready to buy a 2011 MacBook Pro as soon as my financial aid for summer school hits next week!

Yes, my HP has been servicable. It has done what I need it to do, for the most part, but it wasn't the MacBook Pro that I wanted. Every time I see a Mac I am jealous and now I figure why? Just spend the money and get what I want while I can! Opinions are like a$&holes, everyone has one and they usually stink. Only you can know what you want and need and what will make you happy. I could have been using a 2008 MacBook Pro for the past 3 years and have regretably been using an HP instead. If you want the Mac, just buy it! Don't wait around like I did and spend several years regretting the decision.

Lovin the 13"

The 2011 MBPs are really powerful compared with last year's models, so buying one now would last you a while. And the 2012 models are still several months away, so I recommend buying the 2011 model. I bought the base 13" back in March, and am absolutely loving it!! Its my first Mac, and I found the OS to be much better than Windows, especially with Lion just right around the corner.

Unless your doing hardcore gaming or hours of work, the 13" MBP is perfect size and performance. I just bought a 2011 MBP not waiting for new models. Make the plunge. The mac store employees will help you a lot. They will ask what you will use it for and then recommend the best option. They wont tell you to spend more money than you need. Which is really nice.

13" all the way!

Do it now and join our Macommunity!

MacBook Pro 2011

i just bought the 13'' entry level and upgraded the hard drive to 500gb... Totally worth it!!! :)

Speed... what about Memory on the Mac Book Pro

Most in this thread are discussing the speed of what they have vs. what is next... the machines are fast enough for doing some pretty intensive processes such as 3D renderings and most software doesn't require that much speed.

The concern is not speed, as much as, how much memory especially when you are dealing with memory intensive Cad programs that require 3Gb Ram minimum with 6 & 8 recommended... tag that with software you use on both MAC & Windows which requires Parallels and guess what MEMORY is now you Biggest problem.
Running parallels will require a portion of the memory to run windows plus the memory intensive Cad program, will have you hoping for 12 and 16Gb of ram. That is the real question...When are laptops going to have 16Gb of ram

Work stations are nice but portability is everything... making a presentation on your laptop at the clients location is the only way to go and being able to work at a moments notice anywhere you want... Let's face it, everything is getting smaller and more powerful, so laptops with more memory is the answer... when?

I would wait; Intel will improve graphics drastically over the next few generations. With the upcoming i-3k series (2nd-generation of Sandy Bridge processors), heat and other problems will be ironed out, and the die will be perfected. Ivy Bridge by the next release is improbable, but much hoped. Either way, it'll be an improvement over the current HD3000 graphics (which are actually not THAT bad).

I would wait for 2012 2nd version, as redesigns are sometimes not perfected until the second time around. As for 16GB ram... This CAN be done on a MBP of today, intact the other day I seen ebay selling 2x8GB Ram sticks for $300..

The i5 MBP 13" is awesome, and thats because I came from an Asus G73 17" i7 computer! However, the i7 was much faster, or it seems that way since there is no spinning beach ball.

--------------
Just realized the age of this post. lol

people who get overly hyped for a redesign make me laugh. for example, i swear most of the people drooling over "liquid metal" are doing so just because it conjures images of t-1000 or something. i'm surprised they haven't just broken down and purchased an alienware for the extra bevels and neon lights.

not to say there is never reason to wait, either. i held off on my first macbook pro until they introduced the unibody; but i had some specific things i was anticipating. namely the much easier to keep clean chicklet keyboard and the fewer screws and seams design, both of which were already in use by the macbook air released earlier that year. but those specific niggles aside, i also would have had no regrets going with the previous model (except the whole nvidia fiasco!).

looking ahead to any future redesigns, i think think most desirable potential improvements will be a thinner/lighter body with the removal of the optical drive, and a cooler running system under ivy bridge. whether the weight and/or heat of the current model is unappealing enough to justify waiting is entirely up to the buyer.

one other word of caution. when a redesign does occur, you can bet your britches there'll be an equally ridiculous vocal contingent on here branding the new look as hideous and unusable. with the unibody it was the black bezel, glassy screen, and funnily enough, the chicklet keyboard that i actually desired. you can also rest assured that any quirks that pop up will be met with a dismissive "lol, thats what you get for buying a rev. A apple product"

happy trails :p

+1

I wish Apple still have the old keyboard from the pre unibody design. I liked it so much better and I could type a lot faster(around 10 wps faster). The only two problems I have with the unibody body design is the keyboard and the glossy screen, however they fixed that problem by charging you more for removing glass off the screen. I don't think I can ever get uses to the chiclet keyboard.

People waiting for the new design, might not like the design.

I'm tempted just to buy it now and enjoy as there's always something newer and better around the corner. But that's easier said than done.

I'm considering buying my first MacBook Pro next Tuesday. I think I'm just going to do it. Like the dude said, I'll get the 2015 when it comes out. ;)

Wait or buy now.. I've read all the hype and if they are going to make the pros look like the airs I'm not sure everyone will want one.
I read an article where you'll lose the cd/DVD rom and all the ports except USB and thunder bolt. They talked of doing away with the Ethernet port, FireWire and hdmi. Can anyone say, DONGLE?
Only good thing is longer battery life and solid state drives replace the slow HDD they use now.

My questions are.
If they're going to make the pros look and act like the airs, will they discontinue the airs?
Will they discontinue the 13 inch MacBook pro or the 13 inch Macbook air?

As for now I will keep my outdated 2009 MBP

this thread amazes me. most of the posts are from june 2011 asking if they should wait for the new 2012 macbook pro. Its now 8 months later and still no new macbook pro yet. 8+ freaking months of waiting people were considering.

DVD drive is not needed any more, get an external for those rare occasions and get over it. Moving right along... faster processor, better gpu, lighter, retina display, and usb 3.0. Firewire is not needed because of thunderbolt. Actually usb is not even needed once they start developing more thunderbolt hubs that will have usb 3.0, and esata ports. I'm sure they will keep a few for convenience any way which is fine. What the heck is the problem? OMFG. So really the only downside is the ethernet port vanishing? Boo hoo.
"Stop crying you sniffling ***, stop your nonsense." :D

Although you may not value a DVD drive and USB ports, many people do! Now you hush.

Does anyone know if the Ivy Bridge boards will take the same type of Ram that the Sandy Bridge uses? I just ordered 16gigs from OWC for my Late 2011 Macbook Pro but I think I will get the 2012 Macbook when it comes out. I got the slower version of the Macbook 2011, planning on getting the top of the line version next time since I sold my desktop (8core Mac Pro 2008).
