No TRIM Support

I just changed my CTO order to a standard 5400rpm HDD. At same time I ordered the 480GB Mercury Pro SSD kit from OWC.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/DIYSSD480F8/

As documented in post #8 above, I was so happy with the OWC in my MBA, so I do not want to experiment with the cheaper and probably inferior SSD from Apple (Samsung)

Killer arguments for the OWC are:
- lower power consumption
- no write speed degradation degradation over time
- 7% over-provisioning for data redundancy and error correction

Hey, I noticed that you said that the OWC has no write speed degradation over time...but what about Snow Leopard's lack of TRIM support? Won't that degrade the drive over time?

Also, according to everything I've read online, the Lion Developer Preview only supports TRIM for Apple's (Samsung) SSDs. At this point no one knows if this is temporary (just for the DP) or if it's going to stay that way when Lion is officially released in the summer.

Oh, and check out this baby: http://www.storagereview.com/ocz_vertex_3_review_240gb :)

It should be released in about 2 weeks, and it's about twice as fast as the one you ordered (partially due to SATA III 6Gbps, and partially because of the new SF-2281 processor). I personally would only be able to afford the 240GB version, but I imagine they would release a 480GB one as well, if you're so inclined.

So, what do you think? Is it a better drive? More importantly, if Lion never supports TRIM for non-Apple SSDs, would it degrade with usage?

hey, thanks for the all information on SSD's

I just ordered a new MBP with a 256 Apple SSD, which I can't change now because the computers already been built at Apple in Singapore (I'm in Australia) :)

I was wanting to get a OWC SSD, but since I'm stuck with the Apple SSD, are there any benefits by having an Apple SSD?

Are the 2011 apple SSD's the same as the 2010 SSD's?

I ordered the 128 GB from Apple. I actually canceled a previous order in order to stick that in my MBP. Apple's SSDs won't offer many real benefits, and will definitely be slower than most 3rd party drives. Instead, you get better support for them from Apple (tweaked firmware, Applecare coverage).

I called Apple to cancel as well, but they said I'd have to make a new order and return the first order. Not sure I could do that once I have the box in my hands :)

I'll probably order the OWC later and sell my apple SSD on ebay or something similar.

I've got too many projects on now and need the performance of quadcore! :apple:

Forgot to mention Apple gave $50 store credit because I couldn't change the HD config. That was nice of them even though it was my own fault.

So the question still remains unanswered:

What brand SSD is Apple outfitting the 2011 MBP's with? 128GB in particular.

it's a toshiba, someone posted a pic of the label in another thread. model number is slightly different than the 2010 version.

$250 for a 128gb SSD upgrade?! That's market value for most SSD's in that capacity. I'm impressed that Apple would sell any hardware upgrade for a reasonable price. RAM upgrades are almost falling down into rational pricing, too. So that leads me to ask: what brand SSD is Apple outfitting these new MBP's with? Any of you that have purchased a 2011 MBP, would you mind opening it up to check what's in there? My guess is Samsung only because it seems to be the only brand in 128gb that I could see Apple using. Everything else in that capacity is some off-brand that hasn't ever provided OEM parts to Apple before (as far as I can tell). Based on your answer I'd prefer to just buy the same SSD aftermarket, and pocket the stock HDD to be used as an extra external.

Thanks for reading! =]

Are you asking what "brand" of SSD that comes from Apple, or what we have outfitted in our current system? I got the Kingston SSDNow V100 256GB, and it's like night and day compared to conventional HDD's

where can you buy a ssd in store. bestbuy only has 40 and 80, too small.

If you don't mind waiting a couple of days, I purchased mine through Amazon and it arrived two days later, but then again I do live in Reno, NV and there's an Amazon distribution center about 30 miles away :p
