The iPad2 and iPhone4 also suffered from this, and apparently it isn't a defect at all - it's simply a bonding agent in the layers of the LCD panel that gives everything the dull yellowish tint. After a few days of normal use, the bonding agent cures or evaporates (or whatever it does) and the dull yellow tint is completely gone.

Give it a few days of display-on usage and report back.

+1 - this is what I was thinking.

And I missed that too. *Slaps head* Sorry  Just was thinking it was being said the discrepancy in quality existed on all. Misunderstood :)

Random thought partly related: I'm noticing that the 17" is immune apparently, to virtually every complaint made about the 13" and 15" models... Do they do something particularly different on the 17"?

The major thing they do different on the 17" MBP is that they produce a whole lot less of them than either the 13" or 15" MBP's. Sometimes less is more...

Makes sense. Kind of like how a teacher with a smaller class can spend more time and attention on each student. Thanks :)

They might be playing tricks on you :) Or it may have been the setting you/they were in. The 2011 and 2010 use the same screen.

I had been to a couple of Apple stores & a few BestBuy stores & I'm seeing the "same" thing with regards to the screen of the 2011 models being dimmer than the 2010 models.

I guess you might be right. It is most likely my eyes are playing tricks on me or even more seriously, my eyes might be failing me. Guess it is time for me to make an early appointment with my optician. :(

I owned a 2010 MacBook Pro and now a 2011 MacBook Pro, though they may use the same panels the 2011 version is definately nowhere near as bright as the 2010. I suspect that to accomodate the extra power used by the processors in the 2011 models they have made some sacrifices elsewhere. It was the first thing I noticed when working with my 2011 model. Now people can say blah thats a load of crap, but the reality of the situation is there is a distinct difference in brightness when comparing the two revisions of MBP. My 2010 I would run typically at half brightness my 2011 I run at 3/4 brightness. Having said that all though, I love the 2011 version it is a speed demon.

So my eyes may not have been playing tricks on me after all.

That's odd, I came from a 2010 also and mine are exactly the same brightness =S, actually my 2011 screen is actually better, i get zero light bleed compared with my 2010 :D

Actually it could just be the fact that you got an LG vs a Samsung display.

Supposedly the LG ones are better than the Samsung at least in the 17".

Personally I had a Samsung panel in my 2008 mbp first 17" AG HR LED generation and got a a newer revision of the same panel in the 2011 model.

They are the same brightness (which is ,ore than enough for me) and the new one has more accurate colors and more contrast as well as a little better blacks than the old one.

The LG is supposed to be better but the Samsung is not bad either. Especially that the back light is uniform and it has no stuck or burned pixels.
