2011 MBP and Cinema Display

When my 2011 MacBook Pro is connected to the 27" ACD and laptop is closed and the MagSafe is connected ACD works, when MagSafe is disconnected ACD is dark. Spoke to Apple and we can't figure it out, they sent an email to engineering and will be getting back to me.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior?

Clamshell mode requires the MagSafe be attached.

1. Make sure the computer is plugged in to an outlet using the AC power adapter.

Yeesh, which Apple rep did you speak to? You need electricity to power the ACD 😕
