So, Ive got a late 2011 MBP, with default 4 GB of RAM in much need of more ram - how do I know what ram to get? I need at least 8. Do I need to replace my current ram (as they are 2x2) or what?

how do i know what is the most suitable?

If it matters: i do music production and the software is eating alot of ram

Put in your model at crucial.com and it will give you what you need.

[MOD NOTE]
I changed the title, as it was not really clear what you were looking for by your old title.

You MBP can unofficially go up to 16GB. It has two memory slots, so replacement would be required whether you go to 8 (2x4GB) or 16 (2x8GB).

There are many places on the net that seel memory specifcally for your config. I buy mine from OWC (macsales.com).
