I just bought a new 2011 MBP 15" 2.3 ghz i7 AG HD screen. My last MBP was a 2007 and not the unibody. I love the unibody design and don't mind the sharp edges.

Has anyone figured out a way of dealing with this problem?

I sanded down the two points of the thumb-scoop with 400 grade sandpaper. The finish becomes slightly shinier, less matt, but it is now much smoother and more comfortable. Nine months later there is no sign of any discoloration or pitting etc.

The unibody MBP design is beautiful and symmetrical. It might be the cleanest industrial design ever. But the edges are too sharp.

So I'm wondering if anybody has gotten to feel the new 2011 MacBook Pros to see if they have been manufactured with smoother (less dangerous) edges.

Please let me know.

Just as deadly as last time, and I love it.

dangerous? I think if you get whacked in the face with any laptop of similar weight you'd get hurt regardless of how the edge is.

Very sharp where the indentation is

I have a 2011 MBP -- I didn't even know about the sharp edges issue until about two seconds ago when I pulled my MBP 13" from my backpack and found a drop of blood on the lid. Couldn't figure out where it came from and then I noticed a tiny nick on my thumb where I had grabbed the MBP as I lifted it out of the backpack -- and another drop right by the indentation, which is where I got the nick -- the size of pin prick. The edge itself is not particularly sharp, it's just the corners inside that indentation. Indeed, I will probably have to file it down. I see no benefit to exchanging this at the Apple Store considering the re-installs I would have to do.

It's definitely not. The new MBP's have been out for a day already and not one tech blog as mentioned this.

I saw it from the first snapshots a week ago and a user told me that there were the same, but I really think they are not. If you look in the 2011 macbook pro edges, you can see that they "materialice" the line of the edge with a reflection because they have a 45º cut that somoothes the edges. Older macbook pros don't have this little line.

I have touched the new 2011 MBP 13 inch, the edge is DEFINITELY smoother than my 2009 17 inch.

The sharp edge is annoying, I hate the sharp edege on my mac mini too.

Ipad 1 does not have the edge.

I have a quite thin skin, btw.

Do the Unibodies have the same problem as the older style non unibody macbook pro's in that the anodizing flakes off, in time (couple years of use), at the point where the hand contacts the case?

Yeah the Mac Pro has seriously sharp edges too, on its handle. Given the machine weighs in a 20kgs or so with all HDD bays full i think it could actually cut your hand if not careful. I think it's one of it's very few design flaws.

My 2009 5.2 17" was so sharp it cut we within the first day of use. Two years later and I still have 3 layers of 3m blue masking tape on the edges. If I take it off I it's still sharp enough to cut.

Now my 2011 8.3 17" is sharp but I've survived a week of use with no cuts and no tape. Looks alone you can't tell the difference but my 2011 isn't as sharp as my 2009 so they must have smoothed the edge slightly.

Now before you say it's because I'm old or weak or wimpy here is a picture of my arm taken in 2011. I'm 245 pounds in this picture. I do 8-10 rep sets of strict form 80-90 pound one arm dumbbell curls.

You better watch those veins, dude....you will bleed like a stuck pig. :)

The 2011 floor model I tinkered with had distinctly less sharp edges. It was what pushed me to go ahead and purchase the new one. Unfortunately, the one I got has pretty sharp edges. What's interesting is that it has "2010 Apple Inc." on the bottom of the case. Can anyone who has a 2011 model (with smoother edges) check the bottom of their case to see what the year is?

It seems to be just luck of the draw, to me. My first 2010 MBP 13" had super sharp edges. My current 2010 MBP 13" has nice smooth edges (well, as smooth as they can be since the overall design is sharp). I looked them up by serial number and they were made in different plants. From what I have seen, there is no overall change, just a continuing series of MBP's with edges that vary in sharpness.

Better make a quick video of 10, 90 pound one-arm curl reps :) Otherwise I'm going to have to throw the BS flag, I'm afraid.

I'm sitting with my new 2011, right next to my 2010 ed. The new one is a bit smoother and it says "2010 Apple Inc." underneath it.

Good to know. I was kind of hoping that I got a re-brandished unibody shell that I could of taken back and exchanged for a different one. Sounds like the distinction in the sharp edges is more or less a quirk in manufacturing. I'll have to go to an Apple Store and feel the variances (I purchased mine from Microcenter where they only had one floor model).

Edges are much smoother on my new MBP 13" 2011. But the thumb lip edges are extremely sharp though. I'm running my finer over the edge and if I do it hard enough, I'd probably hurt myself.

Honestly, you guys need to grow up and quit whining, especially if you're a man. To the guy who felt the need to post his arm picture above, you need to stop being so dainty. I'm a 130 pound guy who stands 5'5" and couldn't curl a Curly Q french fry from Arby's and I'm not complaining. How hard is life for you people? How have you survived outside of padded rooms?

It's also been discussed to death, that it's a matter of improper typing technique. These computers have been out for three years, why are people STILL whining about this?

puma1552, You can't curl an Arby's french fry??? LOL. How does that make you a man? I would bitch slap you but I don't hit women. I posted the arm picture and you're missing the point. Some of the Unibodies are as sharp as a Russian Spetsnaz throwing Shovel. Others are relatively smooth.

Regardless, why would a man need to practice your pansy proper typing techniques? Why not just build a product that's not razor sharp? I've never had my Unibody on a desk. It's usually in some contorted position that defies QWERTY logic.

Some people have gone to the lengths of dremeling, sanding or even lathing macbooks down to smooth the edge.

Here are a few:

The sharp edge is freaking annoying even for a guy that hiked around the world for 5 years and has more scars than your IQ.

Why would these guys trash their new Unibodies and destroy the resale value? It's because a problem exists that Apple should have corrected before shipment!

BTW: I'm cutting down a tree with my 2011 17" Unibody. Why? Because I can!

this is my first macbook, and i can't believe how sharp these edges are, truly painful. Love the machine, but the edges make it a pretty painful experience :(

has anyone figured out a way of dealing with this problem?

use wrist wraps!

Oh please.

Maybe it's just me but I haven't met too many meatheads with an IQ greater than that of a peanut.
