2011 MBP - Texting via Messages App

I'm trying to get text messages working through the Messages app but its not working. I have a 2011 MBP. I can send iMessages but not texts. Calls aren't working either

I'm guessing I need to be running IOS 8 on my iPhone?

once you get to that point, make sure you open the Messages app, and check the box next to your phone number.
