Hi Everyone,

My 2011 17' MBP I7 Core will not turn on. I tried the SMC and NVRAM reset via internet. The only way I can get it to turn kinda on is to keep the Shift,Control,Option buttons pressed down
As soon as I release them it starts to load and the computer turns off. If I press them and let them go, the system starts up with he apple sound it makes and then shuts down before the able logo appears.I know about the Radeongate stuff, but not sure if that what this is. I have provided a video to see whats going on.

.

Any help or Recommendations?

Thanks,

Tommy

Can you see it now? I can when I go into my thread.

Yep. Yeah it doesn’t seem good. So let’s run through the possibilities.

- Completely faulty RAM: you’d get bleeps on startup.
- One faulty RAM stick: unlikely to show effects until in the OS or reinstalling the OS. Would boot into recovery partition but may not reinstall.
- CPU failure: it won’t turn on at all.
- Faulty PSU: won’t turn on or may not show a light when plugging in charger.
- Display failure: would work through an external monitor. Might be a longer boot time due to Apple hardware check on startup.
- HDD/HDD cable: would boot but with a question mark
- GPU failure: Display pixels, or freezes on startup/in OS, or doesn’t boot whatsoever when starting up. Plus it’s a documented point of failure.

Not rubbing this in, just emphasising that I’m not going for the easy diagnostic just because these MBPs have Radeongate.

Really sorry, it’s definitely the graphics.

Ok, so do I throw this out then? What is the fix other then new internals? Can I take it apart and do anything?

Yea, I see it's probably dead then? Dam. It was a good laptop too. Will apple do anything for me?

I did PM the thread starter about it. That is very involved it looks like.
No way I could do it myself. But the repair shop that reballed my machine three and a half years ago did this fix for free, I guess they wanted to stand by their fix. So if you can find someone, it might not be too expensive.

The OP of that thread I think will help me out with this. I solder for a living, just not on surface mount PCB's. Through hold only. I have a MBA now, so I'm not sure if I will keep the 17, well see.
