photoshop does exist for Mac, yes. Vegas video I'm pretty sure it is not. Your Mac will come with iMovie, which is great but not really a "pro" app. If I were you I would do some research on things like Gimp for mac and iMovie and see if they will meet your needs. Plenty of youtube videos out there.

As far as your sound system, you mean headphone jack or:confused:

I mean my 2 boss speakers and subwoofer. Tx for your answers btw- I have been researching the photo apps but the movie apps seem to be all over the place! I'm no Lucas, but do enjoy a few of the more complicated tricks for our home movies. I have an HD Sony Handycam - which has its own headaches as far as file formats go.

Love this forum.

Your speakers should work great given they just use the headphone jack.(I'm sure they do)

I use iMovie for movie making and stuff, it's just hard to say if it would be adequate for you or not. Check this tutorial out and see, he covers many of the high points.

Yes because hurting people's poor feelings is so completely unethical, right on par with stabbing someone.

People's stupidity or laziness deserves to be met with condescension or scorn in my book. If a simple Google search or site search can reveal the answer, there is nothing wrong with people pointing that out, with a negative tone or not.

The OP's question about the need for an anti-virus app clearly belongs in that category, while his other question could deserve a topic.

Totally agree.

What is it exactly you are looking for in a "photo app"? Apples iPhoto does plenty of color correction plus organization. FREE. Its a really great app.

Same with iMovie -- comes free with every Mac -- will do plenty of high end stuff. Not the best interface IMHO. http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/

Sorry, I know it is simplistic to call it a "photo app". I use photoshop filters on my drawings and photographs to create my own art. I've hung up a few, but enjoy the process. Artistic filters, burn, dodge, rubber stamp and transparency tools; especially line detect and layering options. Hoping to start working with a tablet after my birthday. :)

For movies oth, shorts clips transitioned together with a soundtrack overtop. Those links were great, I think I could make it work with iMovie, just have to work through the learning curve. I like the timeline editting in Vegas.

I'm an addict on this forum and don't even own a Mac yet!

Gimp sounds like it would be just fine for that use, you can download the windows version and practice.

Oh get over yourself. Half the threads made in this forum are useless in your book, I don't see why you bother posting if it annoys you that much.

There is something wrong with people pointing that out in a negative manner - its not friendly and its not needed. You can get your point across without having to be rude - all it requires is at least an ounce of maturity.

Protecting people from ever feeling bad because they're lazy or stupid, that's being mature?

And how much does it annoy me? Enough to post that message, but now you're telling me I should not even bother posting because it annoys me OMG SO MUCH? Give me a break. To a certain extent I even enjoy making posts like that because I like being critical and not accepting people's flaws. I'd even appreciate other people criticizing me and making me feel bad in the process (so thank you for that aspect of your post). We experience the emotion of sadness for a reason, which is why we should not avoid it at all costs. Besides, the sadness one can inflict with posts here is hardly dramatic. Everyone with an ounce of internet experience knows this.

Frankly, though, it is very annoying to hear people spout nonsense about maturity. I suppose it's just meant to be offensive instead of a thought-out rebuttal. Oh well.

I'm totally cool with people asking whether we need antivirus on osx or not. I was just a bit annoyed with the title. "2011 new imac". I jumped in and there u go, the question is about antivirus.

I'm waiting for the refresh so bad, as the other too. So, 2011 iMac news should be really interesting

But case closed, op's question has been answered. I just don't wish to see another thread titled "iMac refresh is comin!" and suddenly the question is about "My macbook is laggy, how do i fix it? Should i replace it with imac?"

Whaattt

Good point. Thankfully I wasn't that optimistic. =p I, too, am waiting for the refresh for my very first iMac.

I'm not protecting anyone. I agree with your point but the way you went about it was just rude and unnecessary.

The comment about maturity was simply an observation. You do seem to be pretty immature in your posts here. I'm not looking to have an argument because you do seem to take this a lot more seriously than you'll admit. You can respond to this if you think you'll enjoy it but this is the end of the matter for me.

I strongly recommend getting Carbon Copy Cloner which is free or about $15 for donation. CCC (or Super Duper) are must have software. Use together with Apple's Time Machine and you will be able to recover from any type of disaster.

As others mentioned, forget AV or Spyware.... I'm also a photographer and use Photoshop CS5, Bridge and recently purchased Aperture 3 for only $89 from the App store. Either of those are the best for serious photo editing. I also use iWorks as well instead of MS Office - works for me, pun intended ;)

I seem immature in my posts here? I find that very surprising and makes me question whether you have any observational powers at all.

And also, I was not even rude towards the OP. I expressed my views on being rude, but while doing so I was never rude to the OP directly. Only perhaps to you after calling me immature, which makes no sense at all.

So eh. Bye?

Yeah, I'd say the only essentials you need are some decent speakers (for better gaming experience) and probably some sort of USB mouse that can do chording (more than one button at once). USB because batteries running out during a session of Left 4 Dead 2 is awful. :p

Software-wise, there's not much that's needed. Office/iWork if you're doing word processing etc. (iWork apps are available individually on the Mac App Store, of course), your free Web browser of choice, IM apps and things like that. iLife should cater to your media needs at least for the start.

I'm going to buy my first iMac in may. My question is what is the essential software will I need.

Do I need a virus software? If so which one

Without repeating other info in this thread:

No antivirus apps are needed, but I would recommend a firewall app (e.g. from Intego X6... and LittleSnitch). As far as I'm concerned, nothing is impenetrable. If the Large Hadron Collider server farm got broken into, and they use *nix-based systems as well, then anything can be broken into. A firewall app can warn you of possible intrusions or if an app is trying to attempt outbound communication without your approval.
