No one wants the 21.5? Well we can't have that now can we. I prefer the 21.5 paired with a main display. I had issues in the past with the imac 27, went through four of them and the ones in my business over %70 of them have some type of yellowing. Bottom, sides, you name it. My 27 Cinema display has no such issues, is colder in color and no yellow hue to speak of. Not saying that they haven't fixed the issue, but I am not taking my chances.

Imac 21.5-i7 2.8 with SSD=$2100+($900) For Cinema display=$3000 with Corporate Discount.
For a 27 3.4 i7 with SSD would run you $2800. Secondary display ?

Well I am adding a second imac to the list, the first was for my business a 27 base with SSD.

Second Imac was also for my business, Which isn't on the list because it was standard issue, no SSD.

I ordered a 21.5 with a 2.8 i7 with SSD, that will be pared with a 27 Cinema Display in dual screen mode for home use. Using the 27 as the main display and the 21.5 as a secondary display. I curretnly have this setup now with a 21.5 i3 3.2.

Apple finally came correct on the 21.5 CPU. They know where their bread and butter is. :)

My 21.5 should have similar performance as it's big i7 brothers. It is due to ship in two to three weeks.

I didn't fill out the google doc, but I fit in the majority of each statistic. My 16GB of Ram from OWC already arrived...just sitting in my drawer waiting for some action. At least they have each other to keep themselves company while we all wait.

Mine also allegedly arrives on the 16th of June.

That's so so far away. From others who have purchased BTO iMacs in the past, has the wait always been this long? If not, when did the computer actually arrive? If so...then I guess I'll just be waiting until June 16th :p

Apple always gives a worst case for ship dates. They are never optimistic, because it introduces a risk that they could disappoint customers.

There's probably a supply problem with the SSDs (or there's a pending firmware update or software update), and they won't revise dates until they can be 100% certain that they will be able to live up to those revised promises.

Also, consider adding your info to the sheet -- the more data we have, the better informed everyone can be.

I added my info. Hopefully it'll help peeps.

Thanks :D

Same here. There is an authorization on my debit card that expires in 4 weeks, but no charge yet. Same thing as when I buy furniture -- the authorization will be renewed every 4 weeks until it ships.

Odd. I put mine on my Discover card and it's not showing a hold.

Ordered mine today. Called my credit card company and told them about the purchase and they told me they noted it and their would be no problems. Now I have to wait until the end of June for mine. Ship June 21, get it June 28th. Hopefully it ships earlier.

I just ordered it, now to patiently wait 4-6wks
The fact that the Estimated Ship Dates are still exactly 6 weeks after the Order Date is interesting.

I'm guessing the iMacs will be shipping with SSDs that no other previous Apple computer has shipped with, and are still undergoing some sort of validation testing that is expected to "be finished soon". The hold up is probably some process (i.e. validation testing of new firmware), and is less likely to be a procurement issue.

I agree that the exact 6-week shipping estimates, even a week after the iMac refresh, are fishy.

I feel like the key unexplained fact is the difference in shipping times for the 21.5" and 27" iMacs. If it's new hardware explaining the delay (because of procurement or because of validation), why would the delay be less with the 21.5"s?

Possibly the two models are using two different drives, but that seems weird also, because the upgrade price is the same.

I feel like we're not going to know what's going on until the 21.5" SSDs start shipping and we find out what they are.

I'm really, really, REALLY hoping that the delay will yield a 6Gbps SATA III drive (maybe one of the new Intel 510 SSDs).

The wait is killing me. I don't know much about the SSD's, but you think they will be using these. I just saw this on engadget today:

OCZ unveils Agility 3 and Solid 3 SSDs for thrifty speedsters

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/ocz-unveils-agility-3-and-solid-3-ssds-for-thrifty-speedsters/

I'm just trying to make sense for the delay, and stumped by the difference in time between the 21" and the 27".
They would not be using OCZ. Their SSD/NAND suppliers are Samsung (current) or Toshiba, and Apple writes custom firmware for the SSD.

Besides, even if something isn't released, doesn't mean it isn't released to Apple -- i.e. the Z68 chipset is currently available to no OEMs except Apple. Apple also shipped MacBook Pros with the fixed B3 stepping of the H67 chipset in MacBook Pros, whereas all other OEMs were shipping faulty chipsets.

Don't you mean "the Z68 chipset is currently available only to Apple, and no other OEMs have it yet. The iMac's have the Z68 chipset.

I'll be writing a statistics worksheet today that automatically updates itself in the workbook.

I ended up having to cancel my order. The laptop my employer provides is a 7.8lb POS which constantly has its hard disk fall off the SATA connectors and gets a maximum of 3 hours on a charge. After having the filesystem corrupt as a result, and cost me a day at a client, I plunked down for an MBP15. Adding in DIY hardware upgrades and requisite software, I've unexpectedly spent 75% of what I did on the iMac. I don't get reimbursed until the year's end, so I've canceled the iMac since I'm way over my budget for the year.

Well that's too bad. Hopefully you can return your memory. If I had not already bought my RAM would have bought it from you.

After a "restocking fee" and return shipping costs, I'd get about 77% back for what I paid for the memory.

The Apple SSD's will be the same. No reason not to use the same ones. The 21.5 and 27 are the same other than the extra thunderbolt port and larger screen. Other than that the imacs are identical internally. No one knows for sure intil we get a imac with SSD in hand. Which I will be getting on June 1st. So I will let you guys know.

OK, so new iMacs have been available for more than a week now, yet the lead time on SSD's still hasn't gone down. It's still at 4-6 weeks rather than 3-5 weeks say.

Are these going to permanently stay at 4-6 weeks on a sort of sliding ordering scale? As in if I wait 4-6 weeks until ordering one, the lead time will still be 4-6 weeks, but someone who ordered 4-6 weeks ago would be getting theirs in the post any day?

If you order today, your shipment time will be 42 days from today.

The expectation is this will be reduced once the issue that is causing the delays is resolved.

There is NO lack of SSD drives!! The delay is due to a missing controller that connects to the SSD drive. As soon as Apple receives the controllers they will immediately start shipping the SSD imacs.

Ordered today and shipment 23 June ...

at the phone the Apple operator told the dalay is because Apple hasn't yet confirmed/choosed between two SSD models...

I was told something similar, twice actually. Never heard about the missing chip, I don't think it would be the chip, since SSD's come with the chiip controller as part of the SSD itself.

I was told the firmware for the controller was not ready. Not the chip themselves. You know how Apple must have a perfect product. I am happy to wait less than three weeks from now to have a working machine that doesn't give me any problems.

Hopefully they ship sooner.
