Been given a late 2012 27" iMac with a busted screen some cretin tried to remove with a screwdriver.

Screen is an SD F1. I can't source a replacement unless I want to pay at least twice the price of a second hand working unit! (Do these vendors like having all this old kit stuck on the shelves gathering dust, I mean nearly a grand for a screen to go in a unit that's worth at best 350 quid! Idiotic)

So are any of the other displays compatible? I can see several that have the same cabling but is that enough?

Sadly I would not bother on a machine that age, especially if it has a spinning hard disk in it. The display is probably the most valuable part of the machine. Later versions of Mac OS are not supported, so you will be stuck with a machine that can officially only run up to macOS Catalina 10.15, and probably can't get security updates any more. The displays themselves are notoriously fiddly to replace. Many people end up breaking them trying to get inside, to remove dust behind the display or upgrading a component inside.

You best option is to skip it and if you want a legacy Mac then the cheapest option is to buy a decent used one.

EDIT - Actually your best bet if it is just the display, is that iMac has a Mini DisplayPort output with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI, so in theory you could connect to an external display. But effectively you would have two displays with only one working.

A little more than 300$ (210$+90$ shipping), if you are patient enough. And this offer includes edge opening tool and adhesive.
2012 model are quite durable, less prone to the pink edge syndrome like 2015/2017 5k model.

I have it working over a thunderbolt to hdmi cable ATM replacement screens are a non starter and dealers that want £1000 for a screen to go in a machine that's worth £300 max are just morons.
Guess I was hoping to see other screens I can get for a sensible price that would work. I know where there's an SD F2 In my price range but would it work?

Picked up an SD F2 for peanuts due to a scratch on the front that you can't even see when it's on. All working fine and still worth more than I've spent. So yes it was worth it and it saved it going to land fill so eco friendly.
