When will the "2012" iMac be released?

EOL. We are in the post PC era. At best there will be minor, mostly cosmetic changes. Geek Bench scores will not change much for the next few years. Intel has hit a wall, technical, financial, and managerial.

I disagree. Intel is focusing on making faster CPUs that use less power and provide more integrated features in the die. Look at Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge. Nearly double the GPU performance while using less power. Doesn't seem like a wall was hit whatsoever.

I do agree that CPU benchmarks won't continue to trend higher and higher each generation, but the decrease in power and additional integration over the years is going to be huge.

Now or Never!

My vote is on the 16th and here's why: Apple is rumored to send out invites to the iPad mini event on the 10th, pointing to the 17th as the possible announcement date. Windows 8 devices are slated for release at the end of October. Apple always tries to beat their competitors "to the punch," hence, releasing the refreshed iMacs and 13" rMBPs, a full two weeks ahead of their opponents' products. It's possible Apple may also release everything on the day of the supposed iPad mini announcement. Regardless, If nothing is announced within the next two weeks, then I'll be putting an end to this miserable wait. It's also very much possible that Apple couldn't successfully manage their iMac manufacturing problems, thereby, postponing the release until 2013. This last bit seems very plausible as new iMac rumors have withered away.

I am still hoping to see the new imac this month.
here in belgium you must wait 3 weeks if you order a imac in the stores.
there is no stock in the stores.

If the iMac isn't updated by Nov 15th... I think it's safe to say that it's been End Of Lined.

I don't think that's likely whatsoever but if that was indeed the case... there would be a LOAD of heart broke folks on these forums.

It is not going out of production ! That's just a stupid to think. iMacs are a big income for apple, though not nearly what the iphone earns. But it's needed both in production and inside apple. Also all-in-one computers are in 2012 for the first time selling more than desktop computers in total....and apple has the flagship AIO computer. There's absolutely no reason to think it will be discontinued. Slow updates yes, but it will NOT be discontinued. 100% guaranteed.

Frankly I'm amazed that so many people think the iMac would be EOLed. There's still few years to go before Apple does this to their desktops, just in my opinion.
I bet they're just restructuring R'n'D and how things work, so desktops will move onto 2 year release cycles. I know that Apple is typical in axing successful product lines but they'll still want to have some sort of "office" machine for developers.

Hey Tim Cook is more open than Steve J, I don't know how about you but I've already written him a short mail in civil manner, asking on status of desktop machines. Maybe you should too, it's more constructive than complaining on the forum (but don't worry I'm guilty of that too :) ). I've created facebook petition and I have been contacting tech sites to get a coverage so the iMac users get noticed.

There has to be a way to create communication between customers and the company, Mac Pro users have managed to do that because they united and they were loud. Sure, they've got a bit of cryptic message from Cook but still, it's better than silence and "something for professionals" has been confirmed for later in 2013.

There are more iMac users than Mac Pro users, I don't see a reason why something like this weren't possible.

This is interesting. So i checked my local resellers and it's true. i hadn't noticed it yet. So i better wait to buy an iMac.

It's true, apart from the basic 21,5" model, there's plenty in stock at Switch (Belgian reseller).

Yeah i'm not looking for a basic one, as i'm studying graphic design. i'm looking for (probably) a i7 processor, 8 gb ram, … 21" iMac. (for my adobe programs)

Reseller in my country has no stock for iMacs and new shipments have not been confirmed.

What should and what is seem to be at odds. Whatever you think, it is clear that in general, Apple has let the desktop side of the business fall in priority to just about the lowest level, just above EOL.

It'll happen when it happens. Speculation on a new iMac release has been literally beaten to death in a ridiculous number of threads, including polls for projected release dates. I doubt anything more can be said that hasn't been already said hundreds of times.

Probably the best reason for a new thread is that the old threads are all 60+ pages. This will give newbies another place for them to find all of our irrelevant predictions.

For the record, my crystal ball still says Oct 9, but it's getting cloudy in there.

Let's see what actually comes out first, shall we? Manufacturing issues with a new kind of screen is kind of the opposite of "fall in priority to the lowest level".. if it's like 5 consecutive years of 5 spec bumps with no innovation at all, that's how you know it has no priority.

I know that Apple is typical in axing successful product lines but they'll still want to have some sort of "office" machine for developers.

They also push new ideas out before they are ready.

In that spirit, expect computing to become a metered service like electricity. Apple's cloud will control everything, consumers will pay pay pay to do anything with their own files. Professionals too will pay to crunch data faster than any desktop.

It will suck.

If the iPad Mini is coming, the iMac won't be. Apple will focus on launching the mini. We may see a full redesign next year.

The one thing that gives me hope, is that we're not seeing many 13" rMBP rumors either. So maybe both the iMac and the 13" rMBP will be released at the same time.

I agree though, it should happen by the end of October or most likely not until next year.

That's why I said "I don't think it's likely whatsoever" in my original post.

When Tim Cook replied to that user... and then followed up with the press about his comment... he specifically excluded the iMac from being part of his plans for 2013. Which lead everyone of us... including myself... to believe that a 2012 iMac (refreshed or redesigned) was destined for this year at some point. Well there isn't much of "this year" left to go. My money is on October 23rd... maybe October 30th... for a refreshed iMac.

But if it doesn't happen... and say... we go into December without an update... it wouldn't look good for the platform.

Do I think they will discontinue the iMac? NO. Absolutely not. But by mid November... I think it's a fair assumption to begin making.

That's all.
